cnn's jason carroll covering this for us in georgia. open and people are out. >> reporter: they are open and people are out, and a lot of people are watching in terms of what's going to happen here at these polls. and all eyes seem to be on this man, jon ossoff. political novice who has managed to raise more than $8 million for his campaign. unheard of, considering this is someone 30 years old, again, political novice, someone who has managed to tap into some of that political angst among democrats over donald trump. the question is, can he do it? can he pull out enough here to avoid a runoff? and that's still very much a question mark here. certainly, a number of gop candidates say he doesn't have what it takes to ultimately win here in this district, which has been overwhelmingly republican for decades. but you look at what happened here, john and poppy, in november. donald trump won this district narrowly, just by 1%. if you look at what happened here in 2012 when mitt romney won the district by some 20 points. so, you can see there'

let's go to jason carroll who is live at the white house. jason, the president adding i think it's fair to say a bit more confusion to this north korean standoff with mixed messages. >> i think that's fair, jake. the president saying he was looking for a diplomatic outcome with north korea. in the same breath in the same interview he said, quote, there is a chance we could end up having a major, major conflict with north korea. there is one point, jake, where the president has been very clear. he feels as though his first 100 days in office has been very successful on the eve of his 100th day in office, president trump was quick to boast about his accomplishments. >> it's a false standard a hundred days, but i have to tell you, i don't think anybody has done what we've been able to do in a hundred days. >> still the president reflecting on his short time in office telling reuters the job is tougher than he expected. >> this is more work than in my previous life. i thought it would be easier. i do miss my old life. i like to work so that's not

. >> let me turn to cnn's jason carroll at the white house now. jason, white house press secretary sean spicer just spoke to reporters. what did he say? >> reporter: you know what is interesting about this, ana, despite the president is saying that this 100-day mark is not important, it's very clear that historically it's been important and it's still important, which is what we heard from sean spicer today. even though when he spoke to reporters he said he wasn't looking for a marker for the 100-day mark. having said that, he then went on to sort of lay out the presidents past accomplishments over the past 100 days. he talked about the laws that had been passed. he also talked about the 24 executive orders that had been passed. he talked about being able to get his supreme court nominee neil gorsuch through in confirmation. but what he was unable to do was to talk about some of those key points that donald trump had talked about so much during the campaign. health care reform, repealing and replacing obamacare. that is still stalled even though th

jason carroll joins us from the white house with more.o we know what the big announcement is going to be? >> it's supposed to be about tax reform. but the -- a few moments after the president came out and said big announcement on wednesday, - the white house coming out after that and sort of walking that back just a bit. basically saying what the president was saying is that he will eventually have an announcement on tax reform. he will be doing that as quickly as possible. so perhaps that will be on wednesday. perhaps it will be shortly thereafter. at the end of the day, what the administration wants to do is get on the map with something in terms of tax reform, since this administration has been unable to make headway whether it cops comes to health care, immigration reform. if they can get something out in terms of tax reform, it might go a long way to help satisfy some of the critics who say the president has not done enough in terms of meeting those commitments that he talked about for the first 100 days in office. >> on health care,

. >> let's go to jason carroll now at the white house basically saying the buck really stopped with the obama administration. >> right. not sure how that's going to fly, brooke. when you look at what it happening, it's clear that a certain level of confidence and faith was put into flynn, given that he's a decorated general. but when you look at the calendar of what happened here, i think that's going to be hard to simply blame it on the obama administration. it was clear back in 2014 that michael flynn was warned not to accept foreign dollars. he did just that in 2015 when he had that appearance which is essentially an arm of the russian government. following that, though, in 2016, what the white house is saying that he received a security clearance and what they are saying is he got the security clearance in 2016. yes, he did go through a vetting process but because he got that security clearance in 2016, because he is a decorated general and in a sense what really happened here is given a pass. investigating this going forward, the white house covering things up, not turning over doc

cnn's jason carroll is live for us at the white house. se are you learning about this republican proposal? >> reporter: well, it seems as if at this point the president is saying that his position, jake, has not changed and that the proposal that has been put forward does not change his position. he is going to eventually, he says, get funding for the border wall, perhaps not this week. he says once again that his position has not changed and that the wall will get built with plenty of time to spare. president trump finds himself stuck between a campaign promise to build a wall and a battle over funding the government. >> the wall is going to get built, folks. in case anybody has any questions. the wall is going to get built. >> reporter: hours after white house officials indicated that the president wouldn't insist on funding for the border wall as part of negotiations over a spending plan to avoid a government shutdown, the president took to twit they are morning writing don't let the fake media tell you that i have changed my position o

cnn's jason carroll is just outside atlanta now with much more on this. jason, the dust is still settling after a long night. what are you hearing? >> well, first of all, i think you hit the nail right on the head, kate, when you said whether or not it was a close call or wake-up call. it's really both. when you look at the reality of what's happened on the ground, there are plusses and minuses for both republicans and democrats. you look at what happened with jon ossoff. look, he really did want to avoid a runoff here. he wasn't able to make 50% of the vote, but he still made a staggering 48% of the vote and in much part by making this election a referendum on donald trump, and when you look at what's happening here at the end of the day, both sides, you've got republicans and you've got democrats and both of them claiming a victory of sorts here. listen to what ossoff had to say last night. >> and there is no amount of dark money, super pac, negative advertising that can overcome real grassroots energy like this. so bring it on. >> reporter: well, he say
