jason brooks from kcbs radio. >>> this is it. today's when a higher tax on gas and diesel kicks in for california. jessica flores reports from castroley. >> we're talking about billions over the next decade so folks will feel more pain at the pump. hopefully not a shock. we have been talking about it for a long time. lawmakers approved the transportation funding package for things like road repairs, reducing traffic and transportation projects in cities and counties across the state. is it will generate $5 billion a year for the next 10 years. so here's how it breaks down. we have $7.3 billion by increasing the diesel excise tax 20 cents. another $3.5 billion by increasing diesel sales tax to 5.75%. and $24.4 billion will, um, be raised by increasing gasoline excise tax 12 cents a gallon. now, we talked to some folks who decided to top off before midnight yesterday. >>> they told me it was going up so i thought i would go get gas tonight. >> reporter: this is the first time the state has increased the gas tax since 1994 but the new transportation funding could be short-lived. there's already a major effort under way to put a measur
