the mother comes to the door, and then jason harrison appears. his brother says that harrison was zyg with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in his teens and the family frequently called for help when jason refused to take his meds. >> it was so regular to him. and unfortunately, he didn't realize the trouble he was in. >> his brother said that harris had never been violent. and it's uncertain why he came to the door with a screwdriver in his hand. it's hard to say. the police say that harrison lunged at him. and the family says he did not. but he would be shot. fatally. >> when jason appears in the doorway, that's when it seems their training or lack there of concerning mental health, people suffering mental crises just went in the long direction. >> the call us police department said that it finished it's investigation of the shooting, but declined to share the results or answer questions. the investigation has been forwarded to the district attorney. meantime, the officers are back on duty. >> you just get your stuff in order, and you just let

her son jason harrison, was just in need of help. heidi zhou-castro has the story. >> when 71-year-old shirley marshall called 911 last june she knew exactly what to say. >> my process needs to be taken to processing for schizophrenia. >> marshal who worked more than 30 years in state social service, knew the acronym for officers trained in mental health first aid. they wanted them to take her 38-year-old son jason to a psychiatric hospital. she's made the same call more than 100 sometimes in the last 20 years ever since harrison was diagnosed with bipolar schizophrenia, at 22. dallas police made regular visitors to the home. >> about two months ago it would have been a month this time it may be two weeks or something if he gets off of them off the meds. >> calling 911 was never marshal's first choice but she says it was her only choice after government agencies refused to help her institutionalized harrison without his consent and her protests. >> each time they say we're going to send him home after four days, i would ask them, can

after a police camera video surfaced in dallas, officers there killed jason harrison, police say they lunged at him with a screwdriver. there's a similar case in california that has reached the supreme court. dealing with the mentally ill. jacob ward reports. >> resident social worker checked in on teresa sheehan. teresa has skit schizo-affective disorder. the tearnt attendant called for a 5150. two police officers arrived and entered teresa's second floor room finding her lying on her bed. they say she threatened them. they forced their way back in and shot teresa at least five times. >> the last one was pretty much -- trying to think of the word -- execution-style to her temple. the doctors and surgeon says it's a miracle she survived each one, let alone all of them. >> filing suit in san francisco the question if in the courts is whether the police are violating the rights of the mentally ill by going after them in an aggressive way when they know they're in psychiatric distress. the family won in the ninth circuit court of appeals. now teresa's case has reached the supreme court.
