jason carroll has more on the manhunt. >> reporter: a law enforcement official tells cnn that richard matt and david sweat may have left behind personal items including a pair of boots and provisions they may have planned to take with them as they rushed out in a hurry. the manhunt now intensifying in the wooded area just 20 miles west of the prison. a source with knowledge of the investigation tells cnn that mitchell passed tools used in the escape in a chunk of frozen hamburger meat. mitchell asked a guard to carry the meat into the prison and passed to richard matt this as mitchell's husband is speak out for the first time telling "today" show that they planned on killing him. >> matt wanted her to pick her up. i never leave nowheres without lyle. and i will give you pills to knock him out and you can pick us up. and he started to threaten her that someone inside the facilities would do something to harm me or kill me or somebody outside of the jail. >> reporter: had she picked them up he thinks she would not have survived. >> they were going to kill her, and all they wanted was th

he will call for the release of his brother jason rezaian. he hasanian and american citizenship. elizabeth palmer is there. good morning. >> jason rezaian's case is enshrouded in mystery from the very beginning. his lawyer said he will get a second court appearance this coming monday. even this counts as a major development. for more than ten months jason rezaian has been a prisoner in tehran's jail. until last summer he was living with his wife a few miles west of that jail in a middle class family. he was working as a "washington post" correspondent and his articles explored a country that has long been closed to most americans. one of his last pieces described baseball in iran. he also loved iranian cuisine, and he made a cameo appearance on cnn's food show "parts unknown" with the chef anthony bourdain. then security raided his apartment. it wasn't until last week that he finally got his day in court, in a closed trial, conferred by hard lines. the case is so secretive and sensitive that rezaian's lawyer would only speak to us by phone, to say h

jason carroll has more. >> reporter: and the fbi is following up on the leads coming in to them. particular in terms of the investigation has to do with the woman who works at the prison. she knew both richard matt and david sweat. knew them well. worked with them tailoring clothes at the prison. unclear what involvement she may have had with the escape. to recount, both in side by side cells and got a hold of power tools and cut through a steel wall and move down a catwalk and move down pipes 24 inches wide and emerging on the other side. outside of a manhole located a block or so from the prison. i spoke to a man who used to be a guard at the prison. worked here for 40 years. he said everything he knows about the prison leads him to believe they had inside help. >> a lot of help somewhere. >> reporter: is it your thinking they had help from the inside or outside or combination of both? >> combination of both. you don't cut through a steel wall without somebody hearing it. >> reporter: despite the violent pasts of the inmates, both were housed in the honor block of the prison. t

jason carole has more. >> reporter: cars stopped at check points on roads leading to and from the clinton correctional facility, police looking for looks to the location of the two convicts. the investigators are trying to find out if the two had help breaking out of the maximum security prison. a woman inside the prison has been questioned as a possible accomplice. matt and sweat discovered missing early saturday morning. >> leaving no stone unturned. they could be out of state but they could be holed up here in dannemora. >> reporter: they escaped from the upstate prison, both in side by side cells. they used power tools to cut through steel walls, crawled through two foot wide underground pipes emerging through a manhole to freedom. look right up here on barker street, you can see there are a few prison guards standing next to the manhole which is located a block or so from the outer wall of the correctional facility. matt and sweat stuffed their bunk with clothes as a decoy and leaving behind a racist cartoon with the words "have a nice day" the governor given a tour of the escape rou

but jason carroll also mentioned they found food wrappers. so i guess they were prepared because everybody has wondering how are they eating? where are they going to the bathroom? what are they drinking? how are they surviving? >> all good questions and that's not going to last them very long if they have candy bars or some other type of food like that that maybe they had stocked up on from the cafeteria in the prison and put in that guitar case they're talking about that they were carrying or put in their pockets. you know obviously that would sustain them for a very short period of time. you need shelter as much as you need any kind of candy bar, and you need water first. so you can only live so long without water, and it's not very long. you can live a few more days or weeks even without food but the combination of all of the above shelter, food water, especially given the conditions that ulgd have in that part of new york late at night where it's still getting in the 20s at night, that's conditions where you would get hypothermia and risk of death. it's cold enough to be troublesome if you

jason carroll has our report. >> reporter: tests being run on materials found inside a cabin locatedn a wooded area 20 miles west of the clinton county correctional facility. the dna matches that of escaped cons richard matt and david sweat. state police are still cautious about the findings. >> we have recovered specific items from the cabin and forwarded them to the appropriate laboratories but we are not ready to release the evidence at this time. >> reporter: alerts put out warning residents to be vigilant. and on saturday nearly 300 miles away, word of another possible sighting of fugitives near the town of friendship. >> we conducted a search that has ended. we have declared that area clear. >> reporter: also becoming more clear how the men gathered materials to make their escape. investigators are looking at whether tools or other contraband was hidden inside frozen hamburger meat. that meat did not pass through a metal detector. officials are looking into whether joyce mitchell the prison employee facing charges for her part in the escape may have passed on the frozen meat. g

jason carroll has more on that. >> reporter: wanted posters of the two escaped killers are now handedut along the canadian and mexican borders. this as the search is expanding and shifting to other areas surrounding the clinton correctional facility in dannemora. officials admitting today the hunt for richard matt and david sweat, at least at this point, is not promising. >> i can tell you right now, as well, that we have no information that they have been able to leave the area. that being said, it doesn't mean they haven't been able to escape this area, but we have no information. >> reporter: there's new information about the woman who allegedly helped them escape, joyce mitchell. the 51-year-old prison employee warned her husband lyle, also a prison employee, the two inmates planned to kill him. his attorney said his client knew of the plot but said, just because she heard something doesn't mean she was going to act on it. while lyle knew about the plot to kill him, his lawyer said he was unaware his wife was having sexual relationships with at least one of the inmates. a source t

jason carroll has been on the ground for us in upstate new york. developments coming at element every minute, jason. what is the very latest that you're hearing from the ground? >> reporter: seems like there's a development every day when we're out here. in terms of where we are, i know you know the scene very well. we're right off route 374. this is a section that's been shut down, if you take a look behind me, still shut down. you can see a line of cars coming in and out. you've got officials out here checking residents who are coming out, not letting nonresidents into that particular area. also the saranac central school district, that shut down classes for the second day in a row. this as the search continues here in this area, and new information coming in about the possible trail of these two men, richard matt and david sweat, thoughts that perhaps according to what we're hearing about with what the dogs were able to find, bloodhounds found a scent of these two men at the maplefields gas station located just about a mile away from the prison.
