"new york times" reporter kate kelly, back from a family trip in ohio. shannon, you were in d.c., you cover the white house. what are sources telling you about how the trump administration is digesting the grand jury news? how do you even say, oh, oh, untrue, when this is happening? >> i remember back to the may time period and talking to people in the white house who told me that they genuinely thought this mueller investigation would be wrapped up by the fall. you know, this will be distraction of the summer, by the fall we'll be able to move on. finally, okay, all right, you know, and here we are, it's august, and now we're just at the grand jury stage. kind of shows a long road ahead. and what's happened in past investigations involving administrations is, you know, not only will the principal, key players get brought in, but there's going to be a number of people from the west wing who get brought in as witnesses, even if they didn't do anything wrong. a number of people from th

jason johnson, steve cor okorna. both sides were accurate. of the week, do you think, shake on the base at all? >> it doesn't seem that way and i think part of it is that a lot, my read on it is a lot of this gets filtered through the two years that have come before this. this has been -- president trump, candidate trump, president-elect trump, whatever position he has been in has generated news in a daily basis that creates a four alarm, if that's the expression, a four-alarm fire in culture in general and i think it's created a sense, among his supporters, sae certainly, he's constantly under attack and constantly about to collapse and that creates an atmosphere where they dismiss the latest eruption as this is the thing i have heard 1,000 times before. i heard all these cultural figures are angry at him and heard late-night comedians are angry at him and discounting these individual cases to a degree that's tough to calculate, but i think is real. >> it just goes to show you, i think, as well, how much his and other republicans constant po

it's clear that black women, as jason johnson has said many times before, black women are the kryptoniteocratic party. it would be hoove the democratic party to cultivate black women and voters and candidates so they can win some of the seats. these are the elects officials who can decide how the districts get redrawn. >> there's a lot of districts democrats are going to have to win that are overwhelmingly white. i mean there's places where in order to flip the house, right, that you're talking about huge swaths of districts that are 90% white, 92% white where obviously turn out of people of color and political engagement people are crucial. but the way the map works and the way that sort of racial geographic segregation america works, there's these districts that the democrats -- a nut they have to crack, right? >> right. and i think we have to look at partisan gerrymandering. and recognize if this is so majority white country, let's cultivate the talent. you know, they have left in a lot of ways. we need to figure out another strategy to recapture some of the state houses. if not, 2020

, who covered the entirety of the trump campaign, and also returning is our msnbc contributor, jason johnson. so eli, we'll begin with you. what does it mean when these two republican senators, tennessee, south carolina, said what they said today? >> well, i don't know if a dam is fully breaking here, but it's definitely a ratcheting up of the rhetoric coming at this white house from republicans, and i have been talking to republican senators and their staffs on capitol hill this week, trying to figure out what the conversations are, and a lot of them have said this does feel different. when senator corker said that recently his comments don't reflect he understands the character of the nation, i mean, you know, if you are being honest, donald trump's character was on display throughout the campaign, but there is a change in his comments post-charlottesville that has brought some of his beliefs into starker relief for some of the senators and lawmakers on the republican side, and you get the sense there's a greater awareness even if the president is indifferent to history. they are not. they
