they're angry that the white supremacist leader who staged that rally yesterday, jason kesler, stuck around today even though the governor and mayor and everyone else told him to get out. jason kesler insisted on coming back to a spot just a few feet from here and holding a news conference today. we have video and images how that turned out. it turned out very poorly for him. people shouted him down. he spoke for a few minutes. none of us could hear what he was saying because there were so many people shouting at him. there were musical instruments played to drown him out. the crowd converged on him a little bit. he seed to be alone. the crowd converged on him. cy either slipped or was pushed. then the police swooped in clad in riot gear and shuttled him around to the front of the police station here, got him inside and he was shuttled to safety. later he issued this tweet saying "i tried my best but once again, violence rules over speech and ideas in #charlottesville. the first amendment is finished it seems." again anger at the fact that some of these white supremacists stuck aroun

as jason kesler walked out from behind that tree and walked up to a podium that was here and looked out at 50 or so cameras and people started shouting him down almost immediately and it went south quickly. >> my name is jason kesler, i was the organizer of the unite the right rally. >> reporter: it was like adding fuel to a fire. jason kessler chose to hold this press conference in front of city hall one day after the violence. >> what happened yesterday was the result of the charlottesville, police officers, refusing to do their jobs. >> reporter: immediately following his speech he started backing away from the microphone. a mob of people surrounded him. police moved in, grabbed him. and hauled him off for his own safety. new video from saturday shows the driver racing down a side street and on to the crowded downtown mall plowing into a crowd of people. 32 year old heather hayer of charlottesville was killed. seconds after that impact the driver reverses, you see a red shoe fly out from underneath his car. police say 20 year old james alex fields, jr. of ohio was the man behind the

>> reporter: well, jason kesler started his remarks by saying police didn't do enough, in his opiniono sort of stop the violence that broke out yesterday. so he was laying some of the blame at the feet of police and city leaders here, but as you saw, the crowd very quickly drowned him out. what is not clear at this point is who were these people? it's not clear if they were residents of charlottesville or counterprotesters still in town or a combination of both. but you may be able to hear they were yelling out things like murderer and go home. the go home sentiment is something that was echoed by the governor of virginia. he spoke to our nbc's tom costello earlier today. take a listen. it does not sound like we have that audio, but you had the governor, governor terry mcauliffe basically saying he wanted to see these white nationalists, neo-nazis, not just out of the town, but out of the state and out of the country. we can tell you here in charlottesville itself, things are beginning to get back to normal. we've seen a lot of the barricades that were up ahead of this rally, they've

>> reporter: right, so jason kesler, who's one of the organizers of the unite the right rally, decided to have a news conference just about 2:00 this afternoon at city hall just down the road from here. when he showed up, there was a large crowd there. he approached the podium, began saying a few words, but the crowd sort of surged forward at that point. some people going right up to the podium, they began yelling at him, saying go home, murderer, and then they started shoving him. at this point he started to sort of back away, run away from the podium, state police sort of came in to try to escort him out. someone actually managed to run up to him and tackle him into the bushes. police got involved at that point, kind of picked him up, started scurrying away down a street. we had photographers that were following him all the way down, they were attempting to get to his vehicle. it's not clear if they ever made it to his vehicle, but they were definitely trying to get him away from that crowd. it was a visibly angry crowd. it is not clear to me whether these were residents of charlotte
