i mentioned the minnesota congressman, jason lewis was at the hospital for a possible concussion.r paul ryan says that one of his staffers has a head injury. doctors are examining him. let's bring in congressman steve knight of california. he and his wife were on the train. she's a nurse. helped treat injured people on the scene. congressman, nice to talk to you. >> hello, shepard. >> shepard: glad you're doing well. we were all on trains, our staff this morning as welcoming back from washington. i was thinking, i can't imagine what it must be like all of a sudden the train runs into a trash truck. your wife a nurse and helping out. >> well, yeah, it was weird. it was a big jolt. as the train went passed the accident, we all got to see what we hit and the aftermath of that. and my wife is a -- she's a nurse by definition. she's a hero. she wanted to jump out there. and the doctors that were on board went out and did everything they could. >> i was wondering, you run into a truck like that. is the jolt such that people are thrown around? and i ask because one congressman was on the

one of those lawmakers, congressman jason lewis was taken due to going through a concussion protocol,lready responded saying he is okay. as you heard from senator flake. the most attention was being paid attention to the individuals in the garbage truck. the investigation is ongoing, brooke. i'm basically told that the belief is that the garbage truck was taking a left into kind of the intersection and either stalled out or got stuck n terms of how much time the train deduct conductor had to react, brooke, senator flake said there was no brake. the impact itself was the first thing everybody felt. when it hit, law measurings were sent across the aisles. senator flake said it took him ten minutes to find his phone, bottles of water flying everywhere. what the lawmakers did in the aftermath, you heard senator flake. i'm assuming they told lawmakers to not get off the train. the lawmakers decided to get off the train. those with medical training. doctors immediately got off. as you noted, one individual did die. another individual, i'm told, was seriously injured, dealing with head traum

jason lewis was briefly hospitalized with a concussion but his official twitter account posted this hourn released and has joined the retreat. joining me now is our own tom costello covering transportation for us. tom, give us the basics here. human error, technical error, what do they think happened, what have we been able to recreate. >> first of all, federal investigators are on the scene from the federal railroad investigation and amtrak has their investigators on the scene. witnesses sate crossing guards, the arms that come down and the fight lites were functioning. and so you've got to now wonder why was it this trash truck was on the tracks. because the train always has the right-of-way. there is some initial reporting from the scene from witnesses who were suggesting that this trash truck may have been trying to beat the train. and as we know, boy, that is a deadly mistake. we've seen it time and time and time again. i mean, we have 260 people dying every year in motor vehicle crashes with trains and we have about 840 people injured every year just in motor vehicle train accident

. >>> joining me is republican congressman jason lewis of minnesota, also on the house budget committee just heard this proposal, you're ware of it. i wonder what you think about it. is it something you can support? >> it is a starting point. that's all it is. whether it is the house or the senate. there will be changes to this. look, my litmus test is simple, we have to make certain we put in place in the plan something that won't have another daca crisis two years, four years, ten years, 30 years down the road. and so you have to have provisions in any plan that make certain we don't go through this again and again and again and that's going to be the starting point, i think, for all the negotiations. >> so what needs -- what parts need to change? what parts you say it is a starting point. what don't you like? >> the pathway to citizenship, without limits on chain migration, then you have a whole host of people that can then sponsor their relatives to come in and you got to a de facto amnesty plan there. you got to limit one or the other. a plan to go to 650, 690,000 daca recipients.

we also know now that congressman jason lewis of minnesota was transported to a hospital. we have a photo of him with his neck in a brace being treated by medical percesonnel. we don't know at this point the extent of his injuries. we heard from an aid previously there was one member of congress who was hurt who was standing up when this accident occurred. everybody who was on the train felt a jolt, especially those traveling near the front of the train. there were laptops, cell phones went fly iing. as you point out, many members had their spouses, children, other family members traveling on board this train. so jeff flake, the senator from arizona who was also involved in helping after the congressional baseball shooting also assisted injured people on the garbage truck afterward. jeff flake was traveling with his wife and son. again, they are headed down to this resort in west virginia. to have this issued conference that was supposed to feature. still planned to feature the vice president and the president. they are trying to figure out the logistics of moving forward.
