we're back with jason riley and joe rago. jason, before we get to trump, let's step back a bit and look at the whole republican field. who do you think is in the top tier as we get into the late summer in. >> i think it's still pretty much a three-man race with bush and walker and rubio leading the pack. >> those three are the front runners? >> i believe so. >> and i tend to agree with you. i think they have the broadest appeal to all of the republican factions. they can appeal -- bush, for example does really well with social conservatives. that surprises some people. they can appeal across the republican spectrum. >> yeah. the big difference in this race isn't between moderate and conservative. it's about political strategy. they're kind of united on policy in very broad terms. but it's between the quite unit en'and the dividers. they need to appeal to more voters or divide, does it need to follow the obama path of polarizing the country and driving out our core voters. >> and democrats think that's a good strategy because

we're back with jason riley, mary kissel and so how explain these polling numbers?y're precipitous fall? >> it certainly is. it's easy to explain. her favorability and unfavorability rating is worrisome for people. look, it's several things. she is scandal ridden. you have the e-mail scandal, the benghazi scandal, the clinton foundation scandal, the fact she has her buddies double dipping at the state department. she is a hypocrite. she says bankers are broke. >> that's popular in the democratic party. >> it is but when she gets in front of the camera people don't like her. she doesn't have the political skills of bill. she is grating and hard to listen to. >> you don't think she's a good candidate? >> that's right. for all of these facts -- >> you said the core political skill. >> the core political skill and the fact this is a person not only who does not light up the room a person who is difficult to listen to. i used to think if you wanted to extract information from terrorists put them in a room with hillary clinton and force them to listen to a speech. >> i do

we have "wall street journal," manhattan institute scholar jason riley.e voices getting muffled with one or two standing out. is this good or pad for the process of the gop? >> at this point it is fine. charles: don't we have to weed out? does it get confusing? >> it inevitably will. it looks to me if you are a republican, a conservative you see a very strong field out there. you see a very deep bench. and so, you let the process take its course and debates will be one important way of vetting the candidates. right now, really it's a popularity contest. most well-known people tend to be surging. charles: ones that are surging. only two guys are surging right? jeb bush is not conservative per se, even though like to be portrayed as one. you have donald trump. they're surging in all the polls. they keep going up. jeb to me is sort of a mystery. i never hear from him. never says much. a lot of people in the core gop don't like him but he is surging in the poll. we do know why trump is surging in the polls. he hit a nerve. >> you may not describe jeb as conse
