martin joins us on the phone and he's just outside of jasper, alabama, on the way to tupelo. what are the conditions like where you are? >> reporter: you're right. we left atlanta this morning and it was a typical southern day, partly cloudy and warm. and we're headed about 50 miles away to tupelo and it's very dark. >> have you heard anything from anybody on the ground in tupelo in terms of damage done, whether or not the tornado is expected back through the same storm system in the general area? >> no, we haven't. they are warning people to shelter in place. it's described, as you heard, a tornado emergency. it doesn't get any worse than that. so right now it is getting people underground because that's the safest place to be. as far as analyzing any kind of damage that may have been done or how long the storm is going to stay on the ground or how wide it is, it's still going to be a few minutes before we begin to hear that reading. >> we also heard about a debris field regarding this tornado. explain what that is and the damage is poses. the threat it poses. >> the debris

double springs all the way through jasper and down the south north of tuscaloosa. down through jackson, all of these hot pink boxes, these are tornado warnings. active tornado warnings. so this line will push to the east as we go through the overnight hours. scary part is we're losing daylight. the sun is setting and that's when folks can be in real danger because they won't be able to see these storms coming. and so that's where a lot of times we lose the most lives, unfortunately. so make sure you have your weather radio, this is still that area that we're going to be watching the closest, mississippi through alabama, even portions of tennessee. one quick look at that severe weather map the storm prediction center highlighted this area including tupelo and jackson, the hot pink shaded area that is a high-risk of severe weather throughout the rest of this evening and into tonight very large tornadoes possible with very long tracks just like we saw in arkansas, anderson we're seeing that play out again in mississippi and also alabama tonight, unfortunately. >> jenn
