. >> joining us now is jaxon van derbeken. this is interesting. let me get this straight. we're taking boats from one part of the bay, moving it over a couple of blocks in front of the marina green, and people aren't happy. is anyone happy with this solution? >> well, one of the problems is that this deal to clean -- or partly clean up this site had to be made in secret as part of legal negotiations over a lawsuit that's been going on for two decades between the city and pg&e. once this plan to move the boats over to marina green from the nearby gashouse cove came to light, the neighbors just squawked. >> i can see why here. i can see all sides of the story. so we're looking at gashouse cove right there. what's going to happen after they clean it up? obviously that marina and those boats will go. but then what happens to that part of the water? >> reporter: well, first they have to do what could only be considered a partial cleanup. they're only going to dredge part of the site. the rest they're going to cover with what they consider clean fill. so basically it would be a

let's bring in nbc vaf jaxon van derbeken. how do these meters work, and how much do they cost? >> well, you've got two kinds of devices. one is in the meter itself, and that's basically just the cost of the meter, a few thousand dollars. but pg&e's already replaced putting in smart meter technology. this would just be in addition to that. also then there's the after-meter devices, which are quite compact and fit right in the line. and those activate with shaking as well. those are a couple hundred dollars. and then there's the price to install them. both of them are relatively inexpensive as compared to the price of a fire after a quake. >> in theory, i can go aftermarket, and if i'm handy with that kind of stuff, for a few hundred bucks install that meter myself. or i do have a new pg&e meter at my house. is it in there already or no? >> reporter: no. pg&e says that they're looking at a couple of devices similar to the ones they use in japan. in japan, they mandated all gas meters have the shutoff technology built right in as opposed to in the line after the meter, which is wh

. >> joining us now is our nbc investigative reporter, jaxon van derbeken. what's the issue here? the detective was suspended, correct, for two weeks? is the claim that he should have been fired or suspended longer? >> reporter: well, ladoris cordell, who is a longtime observer and auditor of the san jose police department, saw this material, and she felt that the attitudes that were reflected in these posts, many of which we can't share because they are indeed sexually explicit and also potentially discriminatory, in any event, she believed this essentially disqualified him. but the chief of police at the time judged him to be remorseful and gave him ultimately a two-week suspension. >> is it the same chief of police, and what's the response from mountain view p.d. now because we do understand this is a closed case. >> reporter: right. no, the chief of police at the time is now the undersheriff for san mateo county. and indeed this is a closed case. it was originally going to be a three-week suspension, but as i say, the chief at the time cut it to two weeks in regard to basicall
