what is going through the mind of the federal reserve or jay powell's mind on this bond market?think they are looking at the two-year nominal yield which is a little bit technical. it's also the two-year real yield and the 10 year real yield. if you look at nominal treasury yield and subtract inflation or expected in elation, you have a 10 year real rate of interest above 1% stop that's essentially the highest level real rate and that would indicate to fed officials that in terms of policy rate expectations, they are getting to levels that may be somewhat restrictive. that's baking in the expectations that they will move toward 4.5% which is what the market is requesting and expectations are shifting. it's inflation expectations which are staying relatively low as nominal interest rates are moving higher. kriti: a fascinating conversation, i could talk to you guys for the next hour. coming up next, the fed decides. that does it for me, stay with us as we count down to the all-important federal reserve decision, tom and lisa will take it from here. this is bloomberg. ♪

tonight, it's the season premiere of "jay "jay leno' premiere of "jay "jay garage" with elon musk. >>lize one of the largest utilities it's been hurt badly by reduced gas flows from russia. germany is dealing with soaring energy costs ahead of what is expected to be a rough winter for consumers. in the uk, the british government is outlining a multibillion pound bailout to help companies with soaring energy bills the energy will cap energy prices for businesses for the next six months. those levels would represent a discount of about 50% on the winter contract for electricity and about 25% on the gas on contracts. goldman sachs head of global commodities research and there's so much to run through here. but first is the idea of these two realities that are kind of crashing into each other right now. the first is limited supplies and russia shutting down things, making the energy market so tight. the other, though, is this looming global recession because t central banks are tightening so quickly. how is this playing out? >> let's start with the european energy crisis. i like to point

that was the case jay powell gave very strongly, as was the case in jackson hole.e hikes will continue into the future until they get down to 2%. kathleen: jay powell said they are just barely getting to the point where they are starting to get restrictive. next year, the funds rate at the lowest level is expected to go about four point percent. the highest level nearly to five percent. when and where do they get truly restrictive enough to fight inflation and bring it down? >> yes, this is the part where they keep emphasizing policy is inflation-driven. he said several times they will look at it and decide at each meeting, and the numbers on the dot plot show their expectations. i think this goes with the idea of soft-ish landing. they have not given up on that completely. they do acknowledge there is going to be some pain. they want softening in the labor market. haidi: tell us a little bit about the later -- labor data because the strength in those numbers has made it really tough for the fed right now. >> that is exactly right. they said this, and today chairma

this morning on "squawk on the street" david and carl asked me if i was concerned fed chief jay powell doesn't know all this and he might press too hard on a severely weakened economy. i said absolutely not. i don't want anyone to lose their job but i know the fed needs to stamp out inflation, especially wage inflation, and at least out here in silicon valley that process is playing out exactly how powell wants it. what's bizarre is if we do go into a recession the epicenter will be here in san francisco where so many new companies have been created creating too much demand for labor, demand that's now vanishing rapidly. second, there's an overriding sense of indispensability of these products or at least claimed indispensability. a belief in the necessity of the technology most everyone has a story of why their product will have to be bought by customers because the clients will have no choice if they don't want to be left behind versus their competition. i want to give these guys the benefit of the doubt, but in almost every single case i believe the indispensability thesis is exagge

abc's jay o'brien is here with more. jay, good morning. >> reporter: rhiannon, good morning. federal investigators are now expanding the pool of people they want to question as they investigate the january 6th attack on the capitol. this morning, abc news confirms the fbi recently tried to interview a person currently in former president trump's inner circle. sources say william russell was not home when agents t his house to ask questioned related to the january 6th investigation. the 31-year-old was a special assistant to president trump in the white house. russell moved to florida when trump left office and still serves as one of his aides. meanwhile, former trump adviser steve bannon is expected to surrender to authorities in new york today where he faces new charges in connection with a group called we build the wall, which raised $25 million to build a section of president trump's border wall. much of that money coming from small donors who were told all of the funds would go toward the wall. >> a physical barrier on the southern border and support president trump and w
