meanwhile my next guest has affectionately called jay powell, j.j.o here is the question for our next guest, kenny polcari, on j.j. hate stone wealth chief market strategist. i got to ask you, so what do you think about j.j.'s performance because i got to tell you, kenny, looks like wall street is happy with it? >> well, wall street is happy with it but you and i have discussed this. i thought the nervousness going into the last couple of weeks, it started to feed on itself, right? remember every time we broke one of those key technical levels the algorithms sent wave after wave of sells putting us into an oversold condition, a short-term oversold condition. when j.j. comes out, kind of satisfies the markets, janet pulls back a little bit on the amount she will bring to the treasury, everybody taking that as a positive. all of sudden the algos go, everything is cheap, everything is a buy, look what happens. they go scrambling to get back in. we have had three dramatic days in the market. today being just another one. to the point of your prior guest.

what are you hearing from jay powell?e spoke that rates are doing a better job and he still believes we could see that quote, unquote soft landing. what are you expecting to hear from the news conference? >> we had the shift in rhetoric how that's tightening financial conditions and that does some of the work for the rate hike for the fed. but since that, we've had strong data and some fed officials kind of shifting back toward reminding us that ultimately they are data dependent. i think our forecast, the way we see the data playing out, the fed can stay on hold and we're not pencilling another hike in december, but it go oink to be very dependent specific. >> pce, two cpis before the november/december decision. does that mean we're going to see the fed stop its rate hiking campaign and we're possibly, possibly on the path to cuts? >> yeah. this is our -- we're thinking we're at the terminal level now already, but that chance of a hike is still on the table. certainly today's meeting, there won't be an updated dot plot.

jay, your thoughts going into the cpi.en what's gone on with gasoline in the month of october. >> watch the court number 4.1% if we can break 4% then we should see the rally continue. today i expected it we had a nice friday rally that was a new thing the sentiment change to me it was a little shaky usually we go into weekends risk off and this week shorts covered and people kept their long position the cpi will be telling and once we get through that if things are all clear i think we valley for the next few weeks. stuart: extended the move in november markets up 7% just in november so far. cheryl you have those numbers in the ppi on wednesday. >> cpi working at walmart, target, home depot, i can't wait to see walmart's numbers how many people are going to buy groceries at walmart. that is big story. >> taking market share for everybody else. liz peek, j woods, cheryl casone, thank you so much we are going to be back tomorrow, "varney & company" picks it up, take it away. stuart: good morning maria, good

we'll hear from jay powell later.all street seeing no rate hikes, staying where we are, june of next year a rate cut. i want to bring in ubs private wealth managing director alli mccarthy. let's start with this. where are you? everyone is saying jay powell is going to articulate today at least one more rate hike but we don't see it in the fed funds futures or anything like that. where are you? >> we don't see it either, and largely the reason we don't see it because of all the tightening that has happened within the yield curve itself, all the dynamics, technical dynamics you pointed to, treasury having to issue more than expected and the fed the largest buyer in the past rolling down their balance sheet. so there are issues there. you know, i think, we have a 5 1/2% interest rate. we still are just starting to see signs that that's penetrating the market in terms of things like the job picture. we still see growth at close to 5%. charles: right. >> so this is a really confusing picture not only for investors but for

what is going on across these markets is what we heard from jay powell. the fed is not going to hesitate to raise rates if needed. they are still data-dependent. essentially it pours cold water into the rally we have seen. certainly, that will be a key we are watching and markets today. it is basically risk off when it comes to stocks. we are at session lows, down 1% from your asia benchmark. this is how we are seeing it market to market. indonesia is coming online now. the whole discussion of whether the fed is done, we thought that would calm markets. now volatility is reigniting once again. you have to wonder, and change in that tone if it is enough to price in another rate hike, or was this correcting the narrative? we heard that from bostic as well. we cannot colby and -- we cannot call the victory on inflation. u.s. futures are flat. we are seeing some downside when it comes to japan. we are watching the greater china markets closely. we are down close to 2% this morning. certainly, there was the fed discussion, now you have this icbc hack that did

the headline coming through is jay powell will not hesitate to tighten further, if needed.ut a lot of risk aversion back into markets. we saw stocks dropping into the close. the outset for trading today, again dominated by that sentiment. we have seen yields rising, continuing to rise at the start. certainly something putting a lot of pressure on the japanese yen. you can see it very close to that year-to-date low set at the end of october, 151.72, taking us close to 833 year low for the currency -- a 33 year low for the currency and raises the risk for intervention. otherwise in the session today, very much focused on earnings. the market reaction, too. one name to watch will be softbank given we saw its vision fund posting another loss yet again in their latest quarter, coming in at $1.7 billion, that is the loss for the vision fund, writing down the value of wework, its other portfolio companies. certainly when it starts trading, it will be key. the nikkei, dropping at the start, down .6%. let's take a look at the market moves in korea, thekospi, just coming online. we a

jay, same question for you.you want to sell into this little baby rally or do you want to ride it, the trend is your friend? >> i'm a trend is your friend guy as you know, maria. but i think it's very selective market and technology continues to lead and into the mega caps with the exception of tesla kind of falling beside ah ha are leading. microsoft is trading at all time highs. apple be broke a down trend, looking to make a run at the 52 week high as well. i think the momentum stays with us until year end and the earnings expectations have been lowered so the bar is lower for them to cross as we come into earnings season and the first quarter of next year so i'm still optimistic on the market overall. we'll see what the cpi number comes in. that's what i'm watching the most. that has moved the market and that will cause the fed to either stay the course and pause again or possibly raise one more time as we go into the last fomc -- omc meeting of the year. maria: i think that's december 13th, looking to focus

thank you for joining the conversation, jay. good to see you.u with a market that is waiting on something. the dow industrials up 41, nasdaq down 12, fractional moves this morning. disney is one of the outsize movers, reported better than expected earnings last night, increased the cost cutting plans by $2 billion, target of 7.5 billion. also pushed for profitability in the streaming business, the stock is up 4 and a quarter percent. your thoughts? >> bob iger has to do one heck of a job righting the ship, the stock is trading close to a 10 year low. there is a ceiling on the stock because investor sentiment on disney is so incredibly negative. when you look at disney as a company, they need to focus on their core which is the parks and the cruises and things like that. they're really doubling down on streaming which is kind of surprising because the streaming division has been unprofitable. they're still losing money on it despite the fact they have somewhere around 150 million subscribers with the rest of their acquisition of hulu. and i guess

i think jay powell's commentary yesterday was as expected.al pause here, i think they have demonstrated that they continue to want to be data-dependent, but what is very clear is that financial conditions have tightened over the course of the last six months. we had a banking crisis in the u.s. in march. without rolled through, created a timing, perhaps not as tight as people had expected, but you now have the 10 year yield, having traveled through 5%, that's a first time since 2007. two years very stable. you see u.s. high yield rates at 9.5 percent. u.s. mortgage rate at 8%. very clearly financial circumstances have tightened. that being said, i think there is a likelihood for another 25% hike. our analysts are expecting that, probably against expectations, but i think the fed definitely is not about to cut. haslinda: powell said the fed is data dependent. it's not a new,. it doesn't mean that volatility will persist. it means that perhaps, every meeting could possibly be a live meeting. stephen: i think you are exactly right. i think every

jay, what can you tell us?reporter: i can tell you the fighting has been intense over the last 48 hours, several hospitals in gaza to be frank. it continues with strikes from the air and with troops moving further into gaza and into these areas that are really now urban areas, dense urban areas. we have heard from the idf that they believe that hamas has very important infrastructure centered in and around these hospitals. that's why they continue the intense fighting there. hamas has said repeatedly that that is not the case and this is an excuse, according to hamas, for the idf to strike these hospitals. we know the biggest and most advanced facility in gaza is al shifa. we know that they have been dealing for days without power, without water, without any type of basic medical supplies there, and the doctors have told us from inside that hospital that they are hearing constant gunfire and bombing. we also know that there are 36 newborns that had to be removed from incubators because the hospital has complete
