nbc news' jay gray is live in phoenix for us this evening. good evening, jay. hear there's some movement going on. >> reporter: there is, larry. good evening. we are now learning within the next 45 minutes arizona governor jan brewer will come out and speak about her decision, what she has decided to so with sb-1062. a lot of people have said this is a controversial bill that would allow businesses to not serve people based on their sexual preference or anything else for that matter, and there have been a lot of businesses stepping to the plate saying something's got to be done, including the nfl with a super bowl schedule to be here next year. the nfl has said, look, we're considering everything as this bills continues to make its course through the legislature, now to the governor's office. delta, american airlines, apple, southwest airlines, all asking the governor to veto it. she came into today from a trip from washington. she sat down and talked to opponents and proponents, and said she'll make a decision. now within the last 15, 20 minutes we've learned

jay gray has the story. >> reporter: after six days of protests outside the arizona state house, with the stroke of a pen jan brewer changed the chan chants to cheers, vetoing senate bill 1062, controversial religious freedoms legislation that opponents call a thinly veiled measure allowing businesses to refuse services to gay and lesbian customers or anyone else for that matter. >> i sincerely believe that senate bill 1062 has a potential to create more problems than it purports to solve. i could divide arizona in ways we cannot even imagine and no one would ever want. >> the center for arizona policy, the group that wrote the legislation, issued a statement after the veto saying it was a sad day and that opponents had distorted the measure intended to "guarantee that all arizonans would be free to live and work according to their faith." major corporations including apple, delta, american, and southwest airlines, pet smart, major league baseball, nba and nfl had all urged brewer to veto the legislation. >> i think it was a combination of both the business communities and the activis

jay gray is live in sochi. jay, a huge day for u.s. women's hockey. >> reporter: team usa played their bitter rival, team canada. these two teams don't like each other, and before the olympic tournament two games before this tournament they dropped the glove and got into an all-out brawl. it's unbelievable that these women were out fighting, and they can't do that in the olympics or they'll be tossed out. canada haz has already beat them once. 3-2-1 in the pool games. they are the better team here. they feel like they made some mistakes that cost them that game, and they lost four years ago many vancouver. now they want to take the gold medal home. u.s. men hockey, they get started tomorrow, and their big showdown against canada made it to a quarterfinal, and, again, these are teams that met four years ago in the final, and canada prevailed in that in overtime. it will be interesting to see how it works out this year. women's figure skaegt, the final is tonight. the free skate. the 18-year-old approximate her first olympics. in a presk

jay gray is live in sochi. what is everyone watching today, jay? >> reporter: i think that men's slopestyle is a big deal. four strong u.s. competitors and they examine to maybe get the medal stand more than once in that but men's hockey is taking center stage today. the u.s. team finally on the ice. the nhl players got here a bit late and practiced and shaken off the jet lag and ready to play. they slay slovakia. a monumental showdown four years ago in vancouver. we are talking snowboard, halfpipe. the men were blanked but the women really outstanding on the halfpipe and start with kaitlin ferrington. she came from nowhere to the top of the medal stand here. a former idaho rodeo queen. the last one to make this team. she threw down a monster run and made it all the way to the gold medal. also on the stand we had kelly clark with the bronze so that is good news for team usa. now to the bad news. sh shani davis looking to win only three individual golds in three separate olympics didn't happen. he finished eighth in 1,000 meters and going for gold i

jay gray is live in sochi for us. jay, yesterday heavy fog delayed some of the events. is the weather cooperating today? >> reporter: i would love to say it is, but i would be lying to you. we've had some rain down here in the coastal cluster. take a live look and you can see heavy fog in the mountain, really just socking in the entire resort there. it's something they have been dweeling wi ing dealing with the last couple of days. let's pull away from the mountain and look in, you can see it on a wider scale and see the fog that again is just pretty much encompassing the entire mountain region. what is it doing to the competitors and what are they trying to do to maybe eliminate some of the fog? well, let's take a look at this twitter picture that comes from alex, a cross competitor. he tweeted out a picture of fans trying to blow the fog out of the area. he said that it wasn't that effective, but they are trying to do whatever they can to keep the games going. if you're waiting to watch prime time tonight, if you're waiting to see the results, you'll need to turn down

jay gray is live in sochi. the pressure is on shaun white. >> reporter: you're absolutely right. let's focus on shaun white. he pulled out of the slopestyle event to focus on the halfpipe. he wants his third gold. now he's having problems like the rest of the halfpipers with the course here in sochi. problems and organizers have altered the halfpipe schedule hoping for better conditions. it's getting warm and creating a mess up on the course there. so instead of qualifying runs originally scheduled for 2:00 local time this afternoon, the riders will compete in a semifinal at 6:20 later in the day and the 12 top riders will go to the full-times. that will be in the evening so it will be cooler. they will be able to work on the course and get it good enough to have a strong run. breaking news and unfortunately bad news when it comes to curling. the women's curling team taking on you shall russia here and losing their second match in the round 9 howard fineman 7. a tough go. they came into this with high hopes. julia mancuso added another medal to the mix. a bronze in the super comb
