i'm jay gray. jim? >> in fact there was a piece in a "boston globe" some time ago from a poll that what less than 20% of people in boston supported the death penalty in that case. you getting a sense that there is some disappointment anger, whatever about there sentence? what do you sneel. >> i think you're right, jim. i've been here throughout the trial for two months. everyone wanted the death penalty. as we move through the process, that. this is a state that doesn't have the death penalty. it's been 70 years since anyone was sentenced to death row from massachusetts. they thought it would have been harsher to send him to prison for life. >> jay gray thank you. >> tonight news 4 has learned that a man wanted in another state lives in the same vienna home where a toddler died after an apparent fall. that same man was convicted in the school shooting in 2004. family and friends of the toddler say it was a horrible descent and accident and nothing more. here is david culver. >> no charges yet, not even

. >> jay gray now joins us live from boston. obviously this was an incredibly high profile case. what kind of reaction has there been? how much debate has there been over this verdict this decision to sentence him to death? >> outside of the courtroom and near the finish line where the bombs were placed a lot of people were gathered. others saying that it's difficult to see dzhokhar tsarnaev seeing the rest of his life in near isolation. he wouldn't have any interaction with inmates there. he would be allowed outside for about 30 minutes a day for exercise. but again that would be loan as well. some people actually think that would have been a more severe punishment for this young man to go in that facility and spend the rest of his life. we're a state that does not have a state death penalty. it's been almost 70 years since massachusetts has sent anyone to death row. this is a state that generally doesn't believe in the death penalty, this obviously a very extreme case struck to the core of what this city is all about. >> and s

let's go -- now we have clint van zandt, jim cavanaugh and jay gray. jay is on the scene there. jay, you and i spoke about 15 minutes ago. anything change? and do you see or do you hear any of the activity we have been talking about with the two robots that may have been brought in by the bomb unit there? >> yeah, richard, unfortunately, we're a little -- we've been removed from the scene as you would expect and so we can't see the actual robot that is are interacting with the suspect vehicle right now and i can tell you we have seen other agencies moving in, other police agencies, some federal agencies. a lot of help pouring into the area right now. a lot of activity as far as law enforcement is concerned. we've just seen a group of officers come in and i'm trying to get a better read on it. we may also have some -- no. that's state police. we have more state police coming in, as well. and so this is still a very active scene and it's one that, again, really locked down at this point. this entire area, which is usually a bustling area. restaurants here, stores. a lot of hotels

nbc's jay gray is live. what's the scene in garland. >> investigators are still investigating this situation. still a very tense scene although both suspects were shot by police. it all unfolded yesterday around 7:00 in the evening just as the event was about to end. two men pulled up jumped out and opened fire. one garland security guard was hit in the ankle. he was okay. there was stepped up security at this event already. garland police officers including s.w.a.t. members were on scene and returned fire and killed both suspects. at least three loud blasts have the area around the center overnight. we know that bomb teams using robots were investigating them in the car and the area around that car. we haven't been told yet what those blasts are. we can only assume it was part of that work. we do know that along with the police officers and state police that are on the ground federal agents are here as well chris, including the fbi as they try and figure out how this happened, why it happened. i can tell yo

i'm jay gray news4. >> thanks, jay. >>> the system is creating all kind of havoc down there. it's the same one causing us so feel all this humidity and heat we're having right doug? >> that helps us to bring on showers and storms, too. one thing we're seeing toward texas, about half the state under flash flood watches through sunday, almost the entire state of oklahoma in flash flood watches until sunday as well. let's take a look at that pattern. that pattern is making its way out of the southwest, you can see the jet stream. this is all because of el nino that has formed mao. you can see the jet stream coming south of los angeles bringing pacific moisture, combining that with some storminess making its way right across texas and oklahoma giving them all of that rain. they're going to continue to see this pattern not just for the next couple of days but it may stay like that. for us, we've been on the hot side. an area of high pressure allowing the ridge to develop. that's why we've been so hot for so much of the month of may. that pattern, however, is going to change. that

joining me now from the hard hit town of wimberley, texas, nbc news correspondent jay gray. what can you tell us? >> reporter: hey ari. one of the thunderstorms moving through here making it more difficult. as you talk about. i want to show you the force of the flood water that came up here. this is bark that's been removed from the trees, from the limbs. that's what you normally see in a tornado. that's how strong the water was. it moved up the hill. obviously, much quicker than i am right now. it comes up the hill and makes its way into places that frankly it's never been before. up into the homes that had always been safe. they never worried about flooding up here. now they are dealing with what the water has done, ravaged this area. some of the homes completely ripped apart. wide open. everything inside spilling out. that's the kind of debris. that's the kind of deafvastation the rescue teams work through around the clock joined by the family members and familywho spoke about making sure their loved ones are found. ari, a difficult situation made even more difficult by r

let's get to nbc correspondent jay gray and joy reid msnbc national correspondent. to start with you on this. we just heard from one of the doctors, dr. mark kaplan at one of the hospitals that took in many of the injured. he said he has slept two hours in the last 24 hours. tell me about all of the other rescue personnel that there r there on the ground how they are doing. they certainly must be working a very similar schedule. >> yeah and richard, like the doctor you talked to they are rung on fumes right now. they've been out here working around the clock, trying to gather information. they're getting some support, getting some help as new teams come in. but they know the magnitude of what happened here. they understand this investigation is going the take some time. and so they're reluctant to leave, to be quite honest. a lot of people want to stay on this case and maybe find exactly what they're searching for as the investigation continues. and that's -- goes for the ntsb agents out here as well the federal agents working around the clock and say they will, as y

i want to bring in nbc's jay gray who's on the scene and with some details of what happened there todaynow there was extra security due to the nature of this cartoon contest. while no one was expecting anything like this they were prepared for it, indeed. >> strong security throughout the day here. that did include at least one member of the garland s.w.a.t. team that was in place and on the ground at this event. they had some concerns. they were hired to come in by the school district. they were in place. this is where the event was supposed to be over. toward the end of the event it was apparently running but longer than anticipated. about 200 people inside. would have been finally out at the time this occurred but they were running behind schedule. that's when the two men got out of the car. we are learning that security officer involved was shot in the ankle. he was taken to a nearby hospital, treated and released and the two men killed. the robots had been working the better part of an hour, if not longer. and not only working through this vehicle but in the area i around the vehic

jay gray nbc news. baltimore. >>> a small crowd is marching through oakland for two renes this morning. in support of labor, the traditional may day protest and to protest receipt police killings. >> bob redell is live at oakland city hall. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. we're within the next hour expecting a large rally here at city hall. most will be longshoremen dock workers. you're probably wondering why are they not at the port. they've called for a work stoppage effectively shutting down the port at oakland. you can see they're marching and also protesting. what they're protesting today are instances of alleged police brutality that happened recently throughout the country. we counted roughly 300 people when they left the port not just dock workers but citizens activists who believe in the cause. they left around 10:15. they're marching from there to city hall for a rally scheduled at noon. within the past hour the longshoremen, some spoke their minds before the crowd. typically it'

well let's speak to reporter jay gray, who was in boston for us.ow controversial has this decision been in the u.s.? >> well, you need to consider we're in massachusetts, a state that has no state death penalty and in fact, has not sent anyone to death row in more 70 years. so the reaction and the controversy are mixed. there are some who celebrate this decision saying that justice has been served. there are others who would rather see him spend the rest of his life in a maximum security federal prison. over all that's the end result. there are a lot of people very close to this. this is still an open wound in this city. and there are a lot of different thoughts of how this should be carried out. this verdict is not the last word in this case. there will be appeals and it's not the end of the process. in fact, it's really the first step legally as we move down this road, but it's a huge step in the recovery and healing. >> paint a picture for us. a lot of people spend death row. >> there will be a legal hearing that is a formality. it has not been

nbc's jay gray is in the hard-hit town of wimberly texas. jay? >> reporter: hey, doreen. yeah, the damage stretching for miles. i'll show it how it happened. the blanco river is almost inside its banks at this poinltd as you come across the debris field, you'll see slabs where cabins once stood. this river was climbing at more than 25 feet in just an hour tearing apart homes and families here. from the air and in the light of day, the streets of houston look more like canals after flash floods swept across the area overnight. more than ten inches of rain in some areas in just hours. cars, trucks even tractor trailers were no match for the rising floodwaters that overwhelmed dozens of city streets. response teams carried out more than 500 high water rescues throughout the night and into the day. >> just use good common sense. stay in stay out of the high water. don't drive into the high water. >> reporter: in wimberly texas, the among the missing two family was children. >> my sister will always be my sister. >> reporter: laura mccomb made a trant frantic call to her siste

let's get right to nbc's jay gray with more from baltimore, jay? >> reporter: as you well know thises something the community has been demanded ring for almost two weeks, now, information in the death of freddie gray. a stunning development here today, i don't think there were many that thought the state's attorney marilyn mosby would announce she was charging all six officer ss involved in his arrest. let's talk briefly about what we know. all six officers as i talked about, charges ranging from second degree murder involuntary manslaughter assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment. mosby said that the knife for which he was arrested police saying it was a switchblade, actually it was a block blade, come kpleetpletely legal here in baltimore. they say according to the medical examiner's report that the fatal injuries gray received came in the back of that police van that he was transported in. let's listen to mosby from earlier this morning. >> the findings of our comprehensive, though roe, and independent investigation coupled with the

. >> let's bring in jay gray from garland. that's the dallas suburb that is in texas, and there's been an awful lot said since the shootings and we don't know what the motives behind the deaths actually were. >> reporter: no a lot of speculation, david. you can see the fbi evidence team still working at the scene. here is the car that the suspects were in when they drove up to the events center here. a lot of evidence markers on the ground here. i've counted numbers up into the 70s at this point. a lot to comb through here and they've done that since an hour or so after the shooting and they will continue to do that throughout the evening in what police describe as a long and tense and very meetic lues investigation in the beginning stages here. both of the men involved here had some interaction with federal agents. one lied to federal agents and was convicted and had planned to travel to africa to join a tourist group there. the other on the terror watch list, so that's a key to this investigation and points to a tie with wha
