jay gray is live in philly. jay, i guess what if any lasting impact does the pope's visit have? >> well, right now the impact is cleanup. how do you clean up after to close to a million people spent the weekend in downtown. they're doing so and have been overnight. they continue. you talk about the pope being back at the vatican. he did, in fact, use social media to send one last message. i'm reading it here from his twitter account. pope francis says with my heartfelt thanks may the love of christ always guide american people using the hash t tag #godblessamerica. it was his last words publicly. he said god bless america, walked to what was called shepherd 1 american airlines, a 777, and took a trip back to rome. what a trip it was. six full days. he made sure each of those days was, in fact, full. a hectic and whirlwind trip, many of us who followed worn out. it seems like the favorite part of his trip, the part that really touched him the most was the time he got to interact face-to-face with a lot of the people, stopping often to stop his motorcade and see the infirm. dliern

nbc's jay gray reports. >> reporter: today, police are expanding the scope of their manhunt for three accused of gunning down a police officer in suburban chicago. >> this is an ongoing investigation. we have been following up on leads since yesterday. >> reporter: more than 400 local, state and federal officers have been a part of the search for three suspects described only as two white and one black man who allegedly shot and killed fox lake lieutenant charles j. gliniewicz. investigators say gliniewicz was responding to a suspicious activity call early tuesday. when backup arrived, they found gliniewicz dead. at the time, his service revolver and other gear missing. can. an officer is down. >> reporter: the murder has rocked this community of about 10,000. >> he would always be on my street and say hi to us. >> reporter: gliniewicz was a mentor to young residents in the village of fox lake. a husband and father of four, he had prepared to retire a month ago but was persuaded to stay on the force a bit longer. >> it's just very sad. senseless. >> reporter: emotions that drive the o

jay gray has more on today's court hearing, and the continuing debate over that controversial issue. >> reporter: tensions and tempers flowed outside a federal courthouse in kentucky this morning, while inside, kim davis was sent to jail on contempt of court charges for ongoing refusal to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples. >> i think everyone was stunned that the judge ordered kim davis to be escorted by federal marshals and jailed. that wasn't even the request of the plaintiffs in this case. >> reporter: davis argued she shouldn't have to issue the licenses because they conflict with her christian faith. but a federal judge said today the court cannot condone the willful disobedience of the lawfully issued order. the supreme court legalized gay marriage in june. as davis was taken into custody, supporters condemned the decision. >> this courageous woman of god who is willing to defy the courts, and defy the people who are telling her that she cannot do what is on her conscience, that she cannot follow god's word. >> reporter: on the other side, though, protesters argued th
