joining me to talk about that and a lot more, jeff mason, white house correspondent for reuters, and jay newton. i'll start with you here, jeff. why ratchet up this talk from the podium? is this like other criticism that's been leveled at the media by the white house or does this feel a little different? >> well, i don't know if she was ratcheting up or not, she was asked about it because there was a lot of controversy after her initial response. i think she was trying to explain it a little bit more and put it in the context of espn's policies. whether or not people accept that or not is a separate question. but this is -- this is something that she as the spokeswoman for president donald trump felt very strongly about and that's why she engaged on it. >> okay. so then, jay, this question for you. what's your take on the president's espn tweet during a week where things seemed to be going pretty well for the white house. why bring it up? >> this is a fight that absolutely the president wants to have with espn because in many ways it just rallies his base and says, look, the evil media, they ju

let's bring in jay newton small and heidi przybyla, senior political reporter for "usa today." ladies, with a welcome to you both, i'm going to start auto you, jay. what do you think the president needs to do to avoid the criticism that he got earlier this week? what does he have to do today, and does it even help where it stands with critics? >> he was criticized earlier this week for traveling to the region and meeting with cabinet members but not meeting with victims or family members of the storm. and so today is meant to be much more of a trip to meet with those victims, to meet with the people actually affected by the storm. you know, barack obama, president obama was known as comforter in chief in these moments. he used to go down after storms or after national emergencies and really would hug the victims, would become -- was seen to sort of spend hours and hours being with the families of victims. for example, even sang "amazing grace" after the shooting in charleston at a funeral. that's really what the people want to see from donald trump, what his critics want to see
