jay nixon ordered the national guard into ferguson early this morning after another night of protests over the shootings. nixon said he chose to activate the national guard because of deliberate, coordinated, and intensifying violent acts. community outrage grew after the ferguson police named the officer who shot brown, after withholding his identity for more than five days. for the past disco nights, police have tried to enforce a five hour curfew. on sunday night, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets in an attempt to clear the streets before the curfew began. police fired into a crowd that included family with their children. police accused some protesters of throwing molotov cocktails and trying to overrun the police command center. earlier in the day, 13 hundred people packed the greater grace church for a rally attended by michael brown's parents. brown's cousin addressed the crowd. i justre i say anything, wanted to kick it off like that. to remember is michael brown was not just some young black oil. -- black boy. he was a human being. he was a son, a nephew, he was not a

governor jay nixon ordered the missouri national guard to restore peace and order this. after what officials are calling deliberate attacks against police officers last night. violence once again erupted in the streets about 3 1/2 hours ahead of the curfew. at a news conference a couple of hours ago highway patrol captain ron johnson confirmed at least three protesters were shot at the hands of other protesters. there were people with guns in the crowds. also a number of people throwing molotov cocktails at police as well as looting and vandalizing stores in the area and have the results of a private autopsy on 18-year-old michael brown. it shows that he was shot at least six times. the autopsy indicates that all bullets were fired into the front of his body including twice in the head and four times on the right side. >>> attorney general eric holder is taking the unusual extra steps by having the justice department conduct its own autopsy. nbc news' jay gray has been reporting all night and what can you tell us? >> hey there, good morning, frances. early this morning,

as governor jay nixon put it today, this is a town racked by fear and unrest, a town demanding that its leaders do more to stop the violence. last night on the streets of this already embattled town, anger and rage returned. heavily armed police were back. tear gas, bottles in the air. jay nixon says we have seen acts of grace and kindness, as the people of ferguson try to maintain peace. let me give you examples of what i witnessed. at 8:30 on west florenzi avenue, i met a woman cooking with her family. she invited me and the troopers to jip her for hot dogs and ice cold water -- join her for hot docks and ice cold water. one good hot dog it was. despite the turmoil, she cooked out there for past six nights in a row, inviting people to join her. that is the true spirit of ferguson. and i saw the same spirit of ferguson 10 hours earlier when hundreds of volunteers were sweeping the streets and picking up the glass and other debris, rebuilding the city. >> that is ron johnson, chief of the highway patrol giving an update on the situation overnight. it is 20 past two in the morning in ferguson missouri. he has divulged that an array of handguns have been confiscated by police. he said that bombs were thrown at the police, but no policeman fired a bullet. he said that the diffused tension, as he saw it, was probably due to the presence of elders on the street, as well as

i want to bring in karen conti as we await comments from missouri governor jay nixon.attorney there in chicago. you know, let's talk first about what we saw unfold because you've got this question of what is excessive force by police there in ferguson. heavily criticized by many for how they were reacting in riot gear to protesters early on in this and last night business owners some of them complaining saying, look, where were you, some feeling you didn't do enough when our stores were being looted. >> well, you know, they're between a rock and a hard place. if they come in there and they try to enforce, you know, they're going to be criticized for taking too strong an action. but i heard the store owners sta talk and the police should have been there doing something. looting is a crime and they should have been arrested and processed just like everyone else regardless of the circumstances. >> let's talk about how this could play out as we await the governor of missouri here, i might have to interrupt you in a moment, but let's talk about how this could play out in a

i also just spoke with governor jay nixon of missouri.i expressed my concern over the violent turn that events have taken on the ground and underscored that we all need to come together going forward. he is going to be traveling to ferguson. he is a good man and a fine governor and i'm confident that working together, he's going to be able to communicate his desire to make sure that justice is done and his desire to make sure public safety is maintained in an appropriate way. of course, it's important to remember how this started. we lost a young man, michael brown, in a heartbreaking and tragic circumstances. he was 18 years old. his family will never hold michael in their arms again. and when something like this happens, the local authorities, including the police, have the responsibility to be hope and transparent about how they are investigating that death and how they are protecting the people in their communities. there is never an excuse for violence against police or for those who would use this tragedy as a cover for vandalism or
