the shooter has been identified as jaylen fryberg. as you heard in that, a student describing him as a happy kid. law enforcement officials say that fryberg brought a gun and opened fire inside the school at the cafeteria earlier today. he is now dead from a self-inflicted wound. is it a suicide. there is one other person who is deceased. but they have not identified that person whether it be someone from the school staff or a fellow student. just a short time ago, a spokesperson with the providence everett regional medical center addressed the media. >> three young people are here in critical condition. they are being worked up and taken to the operating rooms. one patient did go to harborview. our emergency department chief doctor triaged the patients in the parking lot here, felt that that patient had wounds that were less severe and could be handled in harborview. >> we are waiting for a news conference from marysville police in a few moments. we will bring you a brief on what they know at this hour. joining me are two congressman.

susan, i know you spoke to a acquaintance of jaylen fryberg, the gunman, about some recent trouble that fryberg may have faced. tell me about what you've learned. >> reporter: right. the motive for all this is still a mystery and investigators if they know what it is, they haven't yet released it. but as you mentioned, i spoke to a schoolmate of the shooter in this case jaylen fryberg, and he's a junior and he speaks to this young man on occasion. coincidentally they had a brief conversation at the start of the school day on friday. and one of the things he said they talked about was his recent suspension from school. fryberg had just come back. he was punished for apparently being involved according to students in a fight that happened at a football practice after some students allegedly made some derogatory comments about him. and here's what the student said of their conversation -- >> it was a moment just a kind of -- just a follow-up on what was going on in his life, you know, you know, like i said, i wasn't -- i haven't ever been that close to him but, you know, i've spoken with h

witnesses say 14-year-old jaylen fryberg opened fire and then shot and killed himself. outside providence regional medical center where the two 14-year-old girls are being treated, susan candiotti, what can you tell us? >> well, no one could have expected it and it will take some time for them to recover from it. i was speaking to a student who was a junior at the high school to told me -- and this is pretty chilling -- that he had a conversation with the suspect at the beginning of the day. they said he seemed perfectly normal, content. they did discuss that he had recently returned from school after a suspension. authorities don't know what the motive is in this case at this time, but this is one thing that we'll be looking at. he was suspended according to witnesses after he got into a fight at a football practice with someone who had made some comments to him, allegedly comments that amounted to bullying. some call them racist comments. and this is what the junior told me about his brief conversation with the shooter yesterday morning. >> it was a moment just to kin
