i'm jc hayward. prince george's fire officials say they know what spark add fire that killed a 5-year-old girl. yesterday's fire happened at a home off carrington court in capitol heights. a 24-year-old man who also lived in that home has been hospitalized with severe burns. they cover about 50% of his body. authorities investigating this tragedy say that the family was simply trying to keep cool during a hot spell. >> what we believe happened is a window air conditioning unit was plugged into a normal household extension cord which was then plugged into a power strip that was plugged into the wall. if you have an appliance that generates a lot of power, whether it be an air conditioning unit, a space heater, a blow dryer and they have that thicker type cord on it, that is an indication it has to be plugged into the wall. >> a 15-year-old boy was also seriously injured. investigators have not released the names of the victims. >>> let's turn our attention now to the elections. president barack obama

i'm jc hayward. >>> the man accused of shooting a security guard at the family research council will appear before a judge this afternoon. floyd lee corkins is facing up to 40 years behind bars after new charges were filed this morning in u.s. district court. our christian fisher -- our kristin fisher has the latest from the scene. >> reporter: both f.b.i. and police are calling this a security guard a hero for what he did here yesterday morning. he's still recovering after being shot in the arm. as for the shooter, we now know his name is floyd corkins. he's 28 years old from herndon, virginia. right now he's in f.b.i. custody charged with assault with attempt to kill while armed, an interstate transport of a firearm and ammunition. corkins is accused of walking into the family research council's headquarters and shooting their security guard after making some kind of negative reference about what the council does. it's a conservative christian lobbying group, against same- sex marriage and for the last six months corkins has been a volunteer at the d.c. center for the lgbt communit
