>>> hello, thanks for joining us, i'm jc hayward. police are searching for the driver of a hit-and-run vehicle that left a herndon woman dead. her body was found just after midnight in the parking lot of an apartment complex on center street and pride avenue. theia reports that detectives are trying to determine exactly what happened. >>reporter: witnesses who live inside that apartment building say they heard no fighting or screaming before the accident, they only heard a thump and then saw that black car peeling out of the parking lot. >> we saw the car moving. >>reporter: this woman peered out of her window and through the darkness of night saw a body on the ground. her husband called 911 and went out to investigate. >> the cops told him to wait and just see if the body is moving. my husband went and took a closer look. the head was moving a little bit. >>reporter: neighbors say the street lamp has been out for nearly a month, so it's unclear if that played a role in the deadly hit and run.

i'mi'm jc hayward. many of us could be -- i'm jc hayward. many of us could be dealing with slow moving storms and steady downpours. let's get right to howard bernstein. >>> generally west of i-95. lightning and thunder with this. the problem is the steering currents are weak so these things have been dumping and sometimes they're raining an inch or two an hour and calming a-- falling apart and redeveloping elsewhere. we've seen a slow drift from just west of i-95 to almost on top of i-95. montgomery county got it this morning. it was pouring in places like rock jil. now just a -- rockville. now just a little shower south of 370 there, probably around -- [indiscernible] just about on the the arlington- fairfax border, we have a cell that's popped north of 66. we've seen heavier rain also inside the beltway. in fairfax city, look at that on the west side. we're seeing stuff. farther south and west we're still dealing with some heavy downpours across parts of prince william county, stafford, out toward areas in goldvein and southern fauquier. a

>>> thank you for joining us i'm jc hayward. they're now focusing on the train's braking system. kristin fisher has been following that story since it happened. she join us now live from the scene with more information. >> reporter: we just got an update from ntsb investigators. they say progress here has been slow, but productive. they have removed 18 of the 21 rail cars that derailed when this train jumped the tracks around midnight yesterday. but main street here is still closed, and it will likely stay that way for the next two days while the investigation continues. we still aren't any closer to learning why this derailment happened. all they will say is a ruptured line triggered an automatic break. but why did that happen? and did the presence of the two teenage girls have anything to do with it? they plan to formally interview the three man crew that was onboard this train. they're also asking the public and the press to be patient. they're saying especially this one will take time. calling the last 24 hours, a well orchestrated, but very dangerous industrial ballet. he sa

i'm jc hayward. >>> a prince george's county family is heart broken. neighbors are in shock after a teenager was fatally shot. authorities say that the 17- year-old girl was found inside a home on chartsey street near routes 193 and 214 in upper marlboro. our kristin fisher joins us from the neighborhood with more. kristin? >> reporter: prince george's county police have just released the victim's identity. 17-year-old amber stanley, a senior at charles herbert flowers high school. she was an honor student. she hoped to attend harvard university next fall. now her classmates just can't believe that the girl with the big smile is gone. >> i obviously don't even know what to say. this is sad because this was her last year in school. >> dang, she's really gone. this really happened to her. this really makes you sad. >> reporter: news spread fast at charles herbert flowers high school. 17-year-old amber stanley shot and killed in her own home. the principal made the official announcement at the start of the school day. >> students were shakenned. students

i'm jc hayward. prince george's fire officials say they know what spark add fire that killed a 5-year-old girl. yesterday's fire happened at a home off carrington court in capitol heights. a 24-year-old man who also lived in that home has been hospitalized with severe burns. they cover about 50% of his body. authorities investigating this tragedy say that the family was simply trying to keep cool during a hot spell. >> what we believe happened is a window air conditioning unit was plugged into a normal household extension cord which was then plugged into a power strip that was plugged into the wall. if you have an appliance that generates a lot of power, whether it be an air conditioning unit, a space heater, a blow dryer and they have that thicker type cord on it, that is an indication it has to be plugged into the wall. >> a 15-year-old boy was also seriously injured. investigators have not released the names of the victims. >>> let's turn our attention now to the elections. president barack obama

i'm jc hayward. >>> police have found two dead bodies inside an apartment in arlington, virginia. investigators were called to the scene on north culpeper street near 19th street about an hour ago. kristin fisher joins us from the scene with more information. kristin? >> reporter: jc, the two bodies were found inside an apartment building just up the street. right now arlington county police are classifying these as suspicious deaths, not homicides but that could change. this investigation is still in its very preliminary stages. joining me now is arlington county police public information officer dustin sturback. i know you've only been on the scene approximately two hours but what do we know? >> the initial 911 call was received by a maintenance worker who discovered the bodies and reported it to the dispatch center. the arlington county police department is in the beginning stages of the investigation of to suspicious deaths in the 1900 block of north culpeper street in arlington county. >> reporter: i know you can't identify the victims but what do we know about the victims at

i'm jc hayward. >>> the man accused of shooting a security guard at the family research council will appear before a judge this afternoon. floyd lee corkins is facing up to 40 years behind bars after new charges were filed this morning in u.s. district court. our christian fisher -- our kristin fisher has the latest from the scene. >> reporter: both f.b.i. and police are calling this a security guard a hero for what he did here yesterday morning. he's still recovering after being shot in the arm. as for the shooter, we now know his name is floyd corkins. he's 28 years old from herndon, virginia. right now he's in f.b.i. custody charged with assault with attempt to kill while armed, an interstate transport of a firearm and ammunition. corkins is accused of walking into the family research council's headquarters and shooting their security guard after making some kind of negative reference about what the council does. it's a conservative christian lobbying group, against same- sex marriage and for the last six months corkins has been a volunteer at the d.c. center for the lgbt communit

i'm jc hayward. >>> slow moving tropical storm isaac is spreading misery for residents living in the gulf coast. much of that misery is being felt in mississippi and southern louisiana. evacuations have been ordered as a dam threatens to break at park lake near the louisiana- mississippi border. a lot of respect denltsdzs lost their homes -- residents lost their homes, and that storm is dumping more rain on areas that are already under water. karen brown is in laplace, louisiana. >> reporter: a flash flood emergency has been declared in slidell outside of new orleans. 50 people had to be rescued from their flooded homes yesterday. today entire neighborhoods are being evacuated. storm surge is causing a bayou to overflow. up to 5 feet of flooding is expected. in plaquemines parish, plans were put on hold till saturday to cut holes in a levee that overflowed causing homes to flood to their rooftops. the holes would relieve the pressure and allow the water to drain back into the mississippi and nearby marshes. 30 miles west of new orleans in laplace, entire subdivisions were evacuated w

i'm jc hayward. howard has been tracking the latest developments from the weather center and joins us now. >> isaac is a little weaker. the bad news is it's moving so slowly, that the rain totals will abtremendous problem for -- will be a tremendous problem for areas across louisiana and mississippi. this thing still spinning. it doesn't look as impressive on the satellite, one sign it's weakening but when you switch it over to the ray gar imagery -- radar imagery, it's still officially a hurricane. this is just south of houma, louisiana toward morgan city as it marches slowly to the northwest. but look at these feeder bands that continue to pound the mississippi gulf coast, pound around mobile, the west side of mobile bay especially getting hit. but here's more rain coming in there. all the rain in and around new orleans, up tort baton rouge, the -- up toward baton rouge, the north shore. a tornado watch not surprising. that's also in effect as these feeder bands, we talked about this, often have mi

i'm jc hayward. good afternoon. we'll have more on the farewell for officer adrian morris. but first, tropical storm isaac is gaining strength and also gaining ground in new orleans. howard is standing by with the latest on the storm's location. >>> we've been watching it all morning creep closer to the coast, probably making landfall tonight. i think overnight will be the worst for new orleans and parts of southeastern louisiana. here's the storm and some good news. there's been a little bit of dry air being wrapped into it. while we've got the bright clusters of red indicating the tallest thunderstorms wrapping around the center of circulation, we don't have an eye showing up. we don't have symmetry and a good looking storm so it's failed as of this point to make it to a hurricane. it's a strong tropical storm. it has the winds at 70 miles an hour sustained around the center. you'll notice a tornado watch has been issued. this is very common for land falling tropical systems on the right side of the path. but from new orleans east toward western florida, potential tornado
