cnn meteorologist jean norman joining us now. jean, good to see you. it's not good for the folks out in the west. a quick reminder that we've been tracking the temperatures in the equator and the pacific for decades. sometimes they get warmer than normal, that's el niÑo, and they get cooler than normal, that's la niÑa. while we've been able to observe it recently scientists let us know when it's going to kick in. and the la niÑa that is beginning will likely through the winter, and that meant bad dry conditions in the western united states. one of the things that happens even though the temperatures are warming the pacific is there's a shift in our jet stream. we see a dip in the eastern part of the united states and a rise out west. and that's where we see perhaps rain in the pacific northwest, rain in the great lakes. but notice a lot of the country the southwest remains dry and warm, and that's the last thing that the drought-stricken states that you see highlighted in red here need to hear. 92% of the west is under a drought. 58% of that exceptiona

cnn's jean casarez is joining us now. jean, what are you learning?> what we learned the deputy killed this morning in the attack has been taken to the medical examiner's office in houston. harris county medical examiner's office. we also know, according to the police department, what happened was, these officers that were already there, they were doing a police related extra job. they heard something was happening in the parking lot. they went out there. they believed they had their man, to arrest him and detain him. obviously, their backs are up, someone came behind the car with a rifle and started shooting at them. one officer succumbed to his injuries. the other shot in the back. a third officer that came out also shot. just to look at the human aspect of all of this, one of those surviving officers that was about to go into surgery this morning. i want you to listen to the constable, mark herman, of the houston police department while he relates what that officer waiting to go into surgery learned. >> he found out bleeding out on the gurney that

what can you tell us, jean? >> this is happening at the moment and we continue to get more information, but you're right, the sarasota medical examiner's office has been called to the scene, and this is the carlton reserve. this is where brian allegedly went to september 13 for a hike, never came back home. his parents have believed that that is where he may be found, and here's what we're learning from steve bertolino who is the laundrie family attorney. he's saying last night that the parents decided they were going to go out to the reserve today to search, and that they told the fbi and northport police they were going to do that, and this morning that the parents, along with law enforcement, found, quote, some articles belonging to brian. that is all we know. we don't know what they were, we don't know how significant they could be, we don't know when they would have been left by brian. but the medical examiner has been called to the scene as well as pasco county cadaver dog has been called to the scene, plu
