jean casarez is live in new orleans with more. good morning jean. >> reporter: good morning, carol. been housed an hour outside of new orleans. it's in a mental and physical health ward at a correctional center. he's being brought back here because in just an hour there will be another hearing. he's not been taken to los angeles yet to face those murder charges. today's hearing is on local louisiana charges that came about last tuesday, which would be a convicted felon in possession of a weapon. this is a detention hearing whether or not he should get bail. it's a constitutional issue. the defense is saying we don't expect him to get bail. what's interesting here is his medical conditions. first of all hydrocephalis is what they are saying. a shunt has been inserted under his scalp allowing for fluid drainage. he had cancer of the esophagus and cervical surgery. if the defense wants to assert that he's not a danger to the community and there's no risk of flight he may bring that up. i think what's interesting is are they going to at all discuss issues that they have with the arrest

jean casarez is joining me for much more on this. jean good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the court hearing will take place in about one hour from now. we're here at the criminal courthouse here in new orleans. the whole issue is will robert durst fight extradition or will he say i will voluntarily go back to los angeles, california to fight these first-degree murder charges. they are the murder charges resulting from the slaying in the year 2000. over 14 years ago of his very good friend susan berman. now, cnn has learned from a law enforcement source that was briefed on this investigation that when robert durst was arrested saturday night in the late hours right here in downtown new orleans, he was near an elevator. he was mumbling to himself and he was sort of walking in circles. he had checked into that hotel on tuesday using cash, a fake name. he had a fake driver's license on him when he was arrested. and he stays in the local jail here until this extradition hearing. now, this morning on "good morning america" the director of the hbo documentary spoke because there

i want to bring in jean casarez in new orleans on the phone and here with me, joey jackson and formerutor dan shore. jean, what exactly did the investigators find in his hotel room? >> well they found a lot of things. i'm right outside the courtroom. there's a short morning break and i may at any time have to go back in. this is a lengthy complex and we're learning a lot of new information. as far as what they found in his room, it involved everything from a lot of cash money, 47 $100 bills, adding up to over $47,000 in cash. they also found several books which they did not list in court. they found a mask for the face and neck. we learned today salt and pepper hair was attached to that mask. but i think the most important thing that we're learning today is the defense stood up saying that a prosecutor and a detective from los angeles drove to new orleans and the morning after robert durst was arrested, they interrogated him personally, out of los angeles. we're also learning that the fbi began to track robert durst from cell phone pinging. they knew he was in houston, but they also t

jean casarez has the latest on all of this. >> reporter: prosecutors here in los angeles want robert come and be extradited to face his first-degree murder charges, as soon as possible. and the defense wants that too. prosecutors in louisiana say not so fast. they have brought state charges against robert durst and on tuesday, durst was in court again at a hearing to face those charges. prosecutors then said, we want a detention hearing, which in essence, is a bail hearing. that's set now for monday. durst at the hearing was seen to be at one point smiling and even laughing to himself. but this is a very serious case out of louisiana. because it involves two felonies. a felon in possession of a weapon and a weapon in possession and with a controlled substance. it can be up to 30 years in prison for both felonies. and so prosecutors want to cross their t's and dot their i's and under louisiana law and constitutionally a defendant is entitled to a bail hearing. that detention hearing. so that is set for next monday. and he may not then be extradited to california until next week. john
