cnn jean casarez is on the scene for us. it all started just before 10:00 a.m. this morning. >> reporter: that's right, wolf. we're learning more about the timeline now. i want to tell you, one of the victims, a 70-year-old male who had multiple injuries to his torso is currently right now undergoing his second surgery of the day. he is in critical condition, but cnn has confirmed that at 9:49 this morning, the suspect in all of this who was on social media a lot professing his hatred of those of the jewish faith made his final post saying among other things, quote, i'm going in, and at that point at 9:54, five minutes later, the call was made from the synagogue saying there was an active shooter. at 9:55, the officers were dispatched and what we're learning, that a pittsburgh police officer was the first person to go into that synagogue and officers are saying that now it was after 11 people were killed, the suspect was conceivably trying to leave the synagogue, met head on with the officer and exchanged gunfire. we're hearing that the suspect went back into th

>> jean casarez outside of the courthouse in pittsburgh there. retired fbi supervisory special agent, and also with us, joey jackson, criminal defense attorney. thank you for being here. james, let's talk first with you about the fbi and how they can police speech. so many warnings on gap, this social media site, but what can and can't law enforcement and the fbi do when it comes to policing the internet and distinguishing between hate crimes and free speech and hate rhetoric and free speech? >> good question. 1791, the first amendment allows us to speak. it covers satire and a lot of the awful, offensive things that these two incidents last week brought to bear. it's difficult, poppy, in this sense. a hate crime is a crime motivated by prejudice and bigotry toward a race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religion. hate speech is different. it's speech. there's no violence attached to it. >> are you saying if the authorities saw all of this and this guy was top of their radar, this very likely would have happened anyways? >> the best that they co

jean casarez there at the hospital, thank you so much.fficials are building this profile of the alleged synagogue shooter and interviewing some of his neighbors. let's go now to cnn correspondent miguel marques who is outside of the suspects home with more details for us. >> reporter: for several hours, federal agents have been going through mr. bowers apartment behind me here. they took no chance coming into this neighborhood. they cordoned off the roads for several hours and then brought the bomb squad in to make sure there was nothing dangerous so they could get in there and do their jobs. now members of the alcohol, tobacco, and firearms and the februa federal bureau of investigation in that apartment no several hours. taking gear in and taking things out so they can look into and paint a full picture of this man, as full as they can, and also gather as much evidence as the case against him moves forward. we spoke to several neighbors. most had very little to say about him. one said he saw him come and go didn't seem very remarkable.

jean casarez in pittsburgh for us and over at one of the hospitals where at least some of the wounded treated. jean, the mayor of pittsburgh just told us a few minutes ago that they will release the names of those 11 who were killed tomorrow. what do we know in the meantime? >> reporter: in the meantime, we know there's six surviving victims. we are right outside the university of pittsburgh medical center. this is a level one trauma center. there is another level one trauma center in this city with the university of pittsburgh systems and these are where the victims are. here's the update that we have at this point. there are two that are in critical condition. first of all, a 70-year-old male. he had multiple gunshot injuries to his torso involving major organs. now, the press conference several hours ago, they said this man was in his second surgery of the day. i just spoke with the vice president in charge of communications for the hospital systems. he has no update as to whether that surgery has concluded or what the status is. he's in critical condition. the other is the 55-year

i want to go to cnn's jean casarez. she is outside the federal courthouse where the suspect had his first appearance this afternoon. he arrived in a wheelchair. jean, explain what happened. >> reporter: well, i was in that courtroom and we already know the date of the next hearing. it will be on thursday, the preliminary hearing at 10:00. the defense actually waived any issue of bail today, so this defendant remains in federal custody at this hour. but he was wheeled in to this federal courtroom. he did not walk in. he had civilian clothes on. i saw his face very, very clear in this relatively small courtroom when he was wheeled in, he was appearing to be extremely aware, very calm, very collected. i didn't see outwardly any nerves at all or any anxiety. and then once he sat between his two assistant public defenders, they actually took the handcuffs off of him, so he could sign paperwork. he consulted with his attorney and then signed the paperwork. the handcuffs were put back on him and that's when the proceeding actua

jean casarez, you were in the courtroom when the charges were leveled. and now we've heard directly from scott brady. no cameras in federal courts, as we know. but this seems to be moving the rapidly. >> it does appear to be rapidly, but also, there are constitutional concerns. and you have to do certain things in a certain amount of time. you know, when i saw him wheeled in, that wheelchair, just a moments ago, not only did he appear very aware to me, his eyes were open, alert, but he seemed calm. there was nothing nervous about him, as he was wheeled in to this courtroom that obviously was a very new room that he had never been in before. packed with people. u.s. marshals, law enforcement, all over the room. they wheeled him between his two defense attorneys. and almost immediately took his handcuffs off. the reason why, he had to sign some paperwork. and later on, the judge did say to him, i understand that you have signed a financial disclosure document saying the that you need to have an attorney appointed for you. jean casarez, thank you so much. christi, back to you in atlanta. >>> victor, thank you very much.sident trump is again calling for unity after the pittsburgh synagogue massacre. he follow through with a scheduled campaign rally in illinois which he considered cancelling at one point we know. the president said terror cannot be allowed to interrupt our lives and said an armed guard may have prevented that attack. cnn white house reporter sarah westwood is with us now. what did he say yesterday, sarah? >> reporter: well, the president trump was condemning bigotry and condemning antisemitism at that rally in illinois last night. you mentioned white aides look at an option cancelling out of respect for the 11 people who loved their lives in pennsylvania yesterday but opted to go ahead and hold the campaign rally any way. now the president did demonstrate a more moderated tone and restrained his focus more to policy than we usually see at these rallies. take a listen to what he said. >> this is an assault on all of us. it's an assault on humanity and require all of us working together

poppy. >> jean casarez there in pittsburgh. joining us now, legal analyst paul callan, cnn law enforcement analyst josh campbell. a former fbi supervisory special agent. josh, i want to ask you this question. these are cases of domestic terrorism. they're designed to kill and strike fear. and there's often been this question as to whether enough resources are being focused on this kind of terrorism, as opposed to the one we tend to talk about when we talk about terrorism, which is islamist inspired great threat. does domestic terrorism in your experience get the resources it needs from law enforcement to prevent these kinds of attacks? >> it has resources, but it doesn't have the same legal underpinning as international terrorism. when you think about islamic extremi extremism, isis, al qaeda, and the like, there are severe penalties for those who operate in violation of those laws. not the same with domestic terrorism. federal law defines domestic terrorism, but it doesn't make it a criminal act per se. what law enforcement of

cnn's jean casarez is outside the hospital where those survivors are being treated tonight. jean, tell me how they're doing. >> reporter: we are outside one of the level one trauma centers here in pittsburgh. it is the university of pittsburgh medical center, mercy hospital. there are six surviving victims in all of this. two of the six are in critical condition. we understand one is a 70-year-old male, multiple gunshot wounds affecting major organs. we know that he has undergone a second surgery, currently in critical condition. another a 55-year-old police officers in critical condition. once again, multiple gunshot wounds. this time to his extremities. we also know a 61-year-old female victim is in the hospital, level one trauma cent center. also another officer and a 27-year-old officer here at this particular trauma center. but some good news, one of the officers, law enforcement, they have been released from the hospital at this point. we also know that sunday morning at 9:30 they will release the names of all that perished in this shooting. 11 fatal victims here in pit

i want to turn now to cnn's jean casarez. she's outside the federal courthouse in pittsburgh. jean, prosecutors have just filed paperwork to seek the death penalty. i know you have some breaking details about the bond, as well. >> reporter: well, it was a packed courtroom and we just came out minutes ago. it was packed with media. and u.s. marshals entered the courtroom, they went through the door where the defendant would come in. he did not walk in, however. he was wheeled in, in a wheelcha wheelchair. this defendant had layman's clothes on. he had a blue pullover top. it was hard to see, but on his right leg, i appeared to white bandages. he was wheeled between the two public defenders on the defense side and almost immediately, u.s. marshal, with plastic gloves on, actually took his handcuffs off. and that was because he had to sign paperwork. he counseled with one of the public defenders for several minutes, signing those pages. when it was finished and there were u.s. marshals all around him, they put back on those handcuffs. one thing, i saw his face distinct and clearly

in new york, the obamas and the clintons, let's go to jean casarez outside the clintons' home. hillary clinton speaking out directly today about this threat. >> reporter: that's right, from florida. she was there for a political rally. we're outside the home tonight, the home is dark except for a lone porch light. law enforcement say it's positioned in front of the property. they are behind me here, but it was the secret service that was sfru instrumental in chappaqua. they were routinely screening the mail. they found a package that they immediately believed this could be an explosive device. they removed it and began a criminal investigation, bringing in federal authorities, state authorities, local authorities, and they were not alone, because from there, it was a domino effect to other devices that were explosive in nature. while this investigation was going on, hillary clinton was in florida at that political rally and she talked about the events. >> but it is a troubling time, isn't it? and it's a time of deep divisions, and we have to do everything we can to bring our co

jean casarez is live in pittsburgh for us with more. hi. >> reporter: the funerals to begin at 10:00 this morning, and these were unique individuals that had a passion for this community and this community adored them. joyce feinberg, 75 years old, she was a former research at the university of pittsburgh. she was a mother, a grandmother. her husband actually passed away several years ago. what they say about mrs. feinberg is she would light up a room when she would come in and everybody that would know she was there. next, melvin wax, 87 years old, and he was an accountant and did many taxes in this community, and she was a brother and a father, and the most important things to him, was his grandchildren, his judaism and the pittsburgh pirates. and then a former businessman and real estate agent, and a former youth coach for basketball. he was most recently a greeter at a local restaurant. you can see how important all of these people were. yesterday there were also funerals. dr. jerry, and cecil and david rosenthal. the streets were l

cnn's jean casarez spoke with dr.gency physician overseeing the treatment of victims at the university presbyterian medical center. >> doctor, we understand that several of your emergency room physicians actually went to the synagogue and began to triage the wounded yesterday. explain how that happened. >> we have an extensive interaction with pittsburgh ems over decades here. a very highly developed system. and we have one of the largest concentrations of physicians who specialize in care outside the hospital. when the event happened, one of our physicians was nearby and became aware of it, responded to the scene. very quickly, he engaged the most senior physician involved and a third physician also came onboard, who had special expertise in tactical ems. that is, entering a scene that may still be unsecured and with active shooting and how do you get medical assets there. so we have the blessing of expertise and the long-standing relationship with the city and the county. >> so do you believe lives were saved becaus

jean casarez is outside the courthouse. what more do we know about the suspect this morning? >> we have just confirmed that he has been released from allegheny general hospital. his last status was he was in fair condition, shot multiple times himself. so that paves the way for this 1:30 appearance in court. we are right outside the federal courthouse, and remember, charges were filed saturday night. i mean, hours after the massacre happened. federal charges, being prosecuted as a hate crime. the charges that were filed had to be expressly consented to by the attorney general of the united states or his designee in writing. that obviously happened very quickly. what also has to happen quickly is an initial court proceeding because there are constitutional issues at stake. this defendant must be apprised of the charges, acknowledge that he understands the charges, told that he will be represented by an attorney, if he cannot afford one, one will be appointed. we fully expect an attorney will be by his side, but what makes this death penalty eligible is the charge in relation t

cnn's jean casarez is outside the tree of life synagogue. she's joining me now. this is yet another horrible, tough day for the community. what are you hearing there today? >> extremely solemn. this community is so together. i just see it as i go into a coffee shop, the locals are just together and speaking. we are here where it all happened, at the tree of life synagogue. the funerals are not here, but there's a very large police presence to insure everything is safe. i want to show you the memorial. there's a truck right now in the way, so we can't see it. we'll go back in a minute because people from the community are coming and laying flowers, and it is just growing so much. the first funeral, dr. jerry rabinowitz, is starting right now at this very minute. it's at another location. he was the doctor that we have heard so much about, the family physician that everyone went to, that everyone adored, who would give his cell phone number in case anyone had a medical question or issue. wearing a bowtie, always friendly, would light up a room. and in the next hour

we want to go back to cnn's jean casarez. what are you learning?reporter: we have been able to confirm, our affiliates are saying that one of the officers has died. one of the five that we have confirmed have been shot has died in florence, south carolina. wolf. >> there were five law enforcement officers shot. one is now confirmed dead, the others we don't know their condition? >> reporter: no, we do not. we know they're being treated at mclloyd regional medical center. that's where they were all taken. this is florence, south carolina, which is 70 miles from myrtle beach and about 80 miles from columbia, south carolina, just to show you exactly where it was. this apparently happened in a subdivision in that area, and at this point they called it an active shooter. the shooter now has been taken into custody, but at least five officers have been shot. three of the florence county sheriff's deputies, two die police officers, and we have been able to confirm through our affiliate one is now deceased. >> are they saying there is one shooter and that

let's go to jean casarez. she's been news gathering on the phone. what have you learned? >> well, we're on our way up there right now. for people that don't live in the new york area, chappaqua is upstate new york. it's about an hour out of new york city. it's interesting that the secret service is saying this morning that the packages were actually identified during routine mail screening. so i think at this point we don't know exactly how close to the residences the packages got. it was late last night the secret service is saying that a single package was addressed to our former first lady hillary clinton. then it was early this morning that mail screeners discovered a package to former president obama. they were intercepted at that point. neither person had received the packages at all. they were never at risk, but there is, as shimon said, a full criminal investigation now with federal, state, and local partners because they have to find out who is sending these. are they correlated? and they are treating them as an explosive device. we don't know if they've confirme
