the story of women in congress starts with jeanette rankin, who is elected to the house in 1916. in a way she is a bridge, from the suffrage movement to women attaining full political rights. she was active in a national woman's suffrage organization, she helped women to get the right to vote not only in montana but a couple of states west of mississippi. and she runs in 1916 and she is elected to one of montana's two districts, and part of her platform is that she is a pacifist. well she is sworn into the house on april 2nd 1917. and the house comes into a special session, extraordinary session, because the president that night, woodrow wilson, delivers a message to congress, asking for a declaration of war against germany. it's the u.s. entry into world war i. and when that vote is held, she is one of the group of 50 members who votes against u.s. intervention in world war i. she served a term in the house and she was on the woman's suffrage committee. she was on the public lands committee, which was an important assignment for a woman from montana. and with so much of the land

she takes part in the jeanette rankin brigade. she opposes apartheid and in the 1980s will join pickets outside the south african embassy against apartheid and against u.s. complicity in helping to kind of prop up the south african government. and eight days after 9/11, she joins with danny glover, harry belafonte, and a number of civil rights activists to call for justice, not vengeance, to decry any move to war and to insist that the united states sort of work with an international law and within the international community to bring justice. so where do we go from here? on the anniversary of the bus boycott last month, president obama tweeted a picture of himself on the rosa parks bus sitting in the classic rosa parks pose. next week as we know, the post office will issue a stamp. she is as one of my colleagues put it, the american version of a national saint. but her legacy asks much more of us than a stamp or a statue, and if we are going to claim her legacy as president obama did last month, then we must realize what it asks
