jeanne meserve shows where the trail has led investigators. >> fire on the ground. >> reporter: it was a truck bomb that devastated the mur ra federal building in oklahoma city in 1995, killing 168 people. and cnn has learned that concerns about a truck bomb figure into the current investigation of the alleged new york/denver terror plot. and this u haul outlet in queens, new york, has been a focus. according to an official familiar with the investigation, a group of afghan men tried to rent a truck here on september 9th, just two days before the 9/11 anniversary. it was the same day naujy beulah zazi was driving to new york from denver carrying according to sources video of grand central station and instructions on bomb making. according to the source, the men showed licenses from ohio and florida as u-haul employees have identified two of them from photographs. one let zazi stay in his apartment while he was in new york. the apartment has been searched and the man questioned. the man denied having anything to do with an a truck or terrorism. >> i'm not involved in this and the story

jeanne, sources are telling you more details now of these plans? >> reporter: first, let me say, heidi, this is very much an ongoing investigation as authorities are still trying to get their arms around exactly what they are dealing with here. we have had sources tell us that during the searches on the residences in new york, they did find multiple backpacks. now, backpacks were used in the madrid train bombings back in 2004 and sources say this has led some members of law enforcement to theorize that this alleged plot might have been involved some sort of hit on a transportation hub, a train station, or a subway station. some place where there would be a lot of people and minimal screening of bags. in addition, two sources tell cnn that authorities have turned up instructions for bomb-making. one law enforcement official says that this information was found on a computer that was taken to new york by najibullah zazi. zazi is the 24-year-old afghan national who's at the center of this probe. his lawyer says this information about bomb making instr

jeanne meserve looks at where the trail has led investigators. >> you can see just smoke and debris and ground. >> reporter: it was a truck bomb that devastated the murrah federal building in oklahoma city in 1995, killing 158 people. and cnn has learned that concerns about a truck bomb figure into the current investigation of the alleged new york/denver terror plot. at this u-haul outlet in queens new york, has been a focus for law enforcement. according to a foreign counterterrorism official familiar with the investigation, a group of afghan men tried to rent a truck here on september 9th, just two days before the 9/11 anniversary. it was the same day najibullah zazi, the man at the center of the investigation, was driving to new york from denver, carrying, according to sources, video of grand central station and instructions on bomb making. according to the source, the men showed licenses from ohio and florida as u-haul employees have identified two of them from fbi photographs. one led zazi stay in his apartment while he was in new york. the apartment has been searched and khan ques

our homeland security correspondent jeanne meserve will take a closer look at this investigation. >> reporter: t.j. and betty, naji bul azazi deny any links with al qaeda but he now admitted having ties to al qaeda. the government is exploring what kind of charges it might be able to bring against him and that down the road, there is the possibility of some kind of plea agreement. he has been undergoing questioning for three days by the fbi, and we do not know what kind of information zazi has shared with them. on friday a homeland security note went out to transit officials and state and local law enforcement. a dhs statement about that says in part, "while dhs and the fbi have no information regarding the timing, location or target of any planned attack, we believe it is prudent to remind transit authorities to remain vigilant." law enforcement authorities have been saying since last weekend that they believe this case was the real deal, a real terrorist threat, the fact that zazi admitted ties to al qaeda would seem to substantiate that claim. t.j. and betty, back to you. >> the b
