i'm joined by senator jeanne shaheen and joni ernst from iowa. >> now we're going to turn to the senate. next yooer we'll have a record numb of women in the senate. we're going to talk some current events. i want to talk about the presidential campaign and hopefully we'll wrap up and hopefully growing influence in congress, particularly in your chamber. with that i wanted to get started. government funding is settle to expire next friday. the two sides are pretty dug in on the funding they want to see for the border wall and birdier security. we have seen trump, schumer and pelosi come together on an immigration deal before only for it all to fall apart. do you think there's a realistic chance they could walk away today with a deal? >> i always remain hopeful. they do have a thorough discussion about what our country needs. our country needs to keep the government funded and keep it open. all of us are hopeful we'll avert a government shutdown. but we also know that we do need a secure border. many agree on that. and that was one of president trump's talking points through the campaign.

and that's a very bad signal. >> senator jeanne shaheen, pleasure to talk to you. thank you for joining me. >> thank you. >>> i want to continue the conversation about syria, including reminding people who may have forgotten why the united states is in syria to begin with. it started back in 2010, when the arab spring broke out across the middle east and north africa and all of these countries colored in yellow here. when the spring hit syria, the protest turned particularly deadly. the government fired on a crowd in a contained area, an unarmed crowd. the international red cross within two years had declared this a civil war, by july of 2012. by 2013, the situation had devolved into a humanitarian crisis, with at least 90,000 people killed. that was back then, according to the u.n. several chemical weapons attacks were reported that year, including one that killed almost 1,500 people, many of whom were children. u.s. intelligence found that the syrian government was behind the attack. president trump wanted to launch air strikes in response, but congress was again
