that is the promise of jeb bush. but what was on display in new hampshire this weekend was a party base that not only doesn't agree with jeb bush, but is going out of his way to attack him. here's marsha blackburn who seems to be toying with a 2016 campaign of her own. here she is taking a direct shot at the common core education standards, something for which jeb bush has been a vocal advocate. >> the unions don't want charter schools. they want a happy meal education. dumb down. equal portions for everybody. that is what they would like. we need to fight those unions. we need to fight for charter schools, and while we're at it, let's replace it with common sense. >> there were boos there. they were directed at jeb bush's stand. he spent most of last week positioning himself as a bill clinton of the gop. but that is not at all what the republicans in new hampshire were looking for. to hear republicans attacking jeb bush underscores the point. a tension between id logical purity and general election appeal. today's r

when you look at what jeb bush was doing this week, did you see shades of what george w. he end of the clinton years? >> absolutely. the comparison goes back even further. when you think about what happened with gingrich. and the republican party paid the consequences for that. at that time, where i was a leaning conservative democrat independent kind of growing more conservative, there was this governor of texas named george w. bush talking about two issues, immigration reform and education reform. and that was the kind of thing that really got my attention and drew a lot of conservative democrats and independents across the bridge to join the republican party and support george w. bush. i think the republican party has changed, but i don't think america has changed. so i think it's these kind of issues that jeb bush is speaking out on that require real leadership. and i love the idea that it's an act of love. and he went into the propellers on that, but i gave him great credit for speaking his heart. that moment reminds me a lot of george w. bush, speaking their heart on

is jeb bush the establishment candidate that needs to be given the nomination? ee. i think there's no way there will be a bush/clinton race in 2016. i'll buy all of you dinner, two bens dinner. i'm willing to go out on a limb. why is that? because the primary voters don't want to nominate someone who was last in office a decade ago. all worked up about obamacare and the policy failures that likes someone who is engaged in those fights in washington or a governor who's governed successfully in realtime. i.e., now. so scott walker or ted cruz or marco rubio or paul ryan. and i think all of them would be better candidates, probably, than jeb bush against hillary clinton. if it's bush against clinton, it's two people who have been around an awful long time, two people who inherited the mantle. then hillary gets to say i'm the first woman president. and bush says i'm the third bush president. and all of us say conservative reform agenda, get away from the failures of the obama years, i think that is a much better message for republicans. >> let's go to capitol hill ri

we all know what jeb bush was talking about. was kind of silly the way jeb bush made his words, but i do get his point, and we do need to get right. the gop needs to get right on immigration. we need to get right on reaching out to minorities. we're not doing a good job, and part of the problem is, joy, you know, is anybody at the rnc welcoming minorities and groups to come and do outreach programs? who is doing the outreach programs? >> yeah. you know, noelle, sounds so reasonable and so smart, but when you look at what's happening with the states, you are seeing voter id laws that help make it harder for minorities to vote. you are seeing laws that have to do with boeshs regulating women's reproduction. you are seeing no change at all in terms of the agenda. how do you square that? >> that's in part because we're living in a post-citizens united world in which big money really blankets the states with sponsored legislation, and rand paul and jeb bush are trying to be the sensible alternative to ted cruz. they're trying to plac

jeb bush, is he the honey badger?nature or the flip-flops on immigration, he is running? >> he sounds like a raging liberal to me, but here in florida we call that position on immigration practical. it's something that jeb won by 13 noints his last gubernatorial election coming right off of the 2000 presidential electric. that took a lot of independents and democrats as well. he has some practical positions, and that's one of them, and that makes him look like a rhino, if you want to call it, or someone for voters in iowa and perhaps other primary states, but also probably gives his commence give some cover to marco rubio and his presidential aspirations too because he said similar things as just pointed out by alex leer where i at the tampa bay times in his memoir similar to what jeb bush said about immigration being an act of love, whether it's legal or illegal. >> i find it so hard to believe that he would try to give cover to marco rubio rather than compete with him. i take your point. the other word for rhino is
