jeff kepner loves life. played softball, took lessons to become a pastry chef, and was always playing with his young daughter and holding his wife's hand. things that seemed rather simple. but then a serious illness struck, and that's where natalie picks up the story. >> that's right, erin. things took a turn for the worse for jeff when a bacterial infection took hold in his limbs, forcing doctors to amputate both his legs and his hands. prosthetics helped but life was a daily struggle. then earlier this year, jeff became the first person to receive a double hand transplant in 9 united states. for much of the past decade, jeff kepner lived without hands and feet. his wife valarie helping him with even the simplest everyday tasks. but kepner's fate changed when his wife saw a segment on hand transplants last fall here on today. >> how do you qualify? >> we think that hand transplants can greatly improve or even transform a patients life, it's very important that candidates go through a rigorous screening proc

very sensitive issue, jeff.ace has certainly come up in many ways over the course of these four days. >> and -- and the profound question that senator cornyn was asking is, is affirmative action discrimination, is it discrimination against white people. for example, the case in which that -- chief justice roberts made that comment involved the school districts of seattle. and one of the things seattle did was, they set up school districts that had a provision for establishing some racial balance in each district. they said that we want to make sure that there aren't all white and all-black school districts, and the supreme court said, that's not acceptable. you can't use race in that way. and this keeps coming up. it came up in the new haven case that we've talked about so much. can new haven cancel a test because they feel african-americans didn't do well enough? can the university of michigan law school use race as one factor in admissions? in 2003 justice o'connor said yes. very unclear whether the current su
