let's bring in jeff ranieri with a look at this. it seems like a classic winter storm. >> you have the characteristics and cold air that helps the hail get created as you get the air shooting up into the upper levels, it freezes on contact and that's why we have hail reports today. the heaviest rain is over the bay area and moving off towards the east. eventually clearing for tonight but again, after a very bumpy day you can see in the storm reports here, several reports of hail across the bay area also a few isolated flooding issues. for those hail reports most recently in contra costa county and concord where they had bee bee sized hail around 4:4 again this afternoon. as we get a look at the radar now, what you'll find is two zones of heavier pockets of rainfall. you're really getting hit hard down here in san jose. moving off towards east san jose but downtown is at a good clip here if you're headed anywhere near there, be careful because the water is building up in the roadways and some of the worst weather right now here from

let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. jeff? >> the storm right now is increasing cloud cover. you can see again that rainfall developing offshore. your eyes go to that zone of red and yellow. excuse me that's the intensity associated with that storm system. we get a closer scan of this on the doppler, you can see it's about 50 miles out here from the silicon valley rainfall rates of half an inch per hour. this is going to move into the bay area. the thing we are waiting on right now is the cold front. once that moves across, we expect that rainfall to pick up not only throughout the early morning but also in a drought. we'll have details coming up on storms impacts the rest of the u.s. in just a few minutes. >>> we had a minor earthquake tonight. perhaps you felt it. it was 10 miles north of napa. 3.7 magnitude. it happened just after 9:00 this evening. no damage but some rattled nerves especially after what we've seen in southern california and chile. >>> last month we reported a student at mountain view high school overdoesed

this kind of goes to what jeff wise was talking about, les?> well, let's get a little clarification on adsb, a tracking system coming from the satellite that sends it to a ground station that then sends it to a radar system. this is used on the north atlantic. the reason the adsb, it was functional, i agree with jeff on that. but the reason it did not perform was because you have to have a participating air traffic control in the entire system. so i don't believe that they participated. as far as turning it off it is not the transponder that turns it off. what turns it off is a function on the triple 7 anyhow of the flight management computer, then it can be turned off. but next gen is going to the united states because we're participating in next gen. with these other countries, europe is participating. other countries are, and i'm not familiar with the far east, but that is why this system failed with malaysian 370. >> david souci? >> yeah, i actually was on the team that wrote the omb 300, the funding document. if you want to know more abou

so jeff, to you first.o i guess use this current as much as a springboard, what at least has been gained from the way in which the search has been conducted so that they can figure out where to go from here? >> well, i think really a lot has been accomplished in the last -- we're in the sixth week now, over more than $30 million has been spent. >> what are the accomplishments? >> well, basically to eliminate where it is not because we've searched on the surface, it is a huge area of the southern indian ocean, found nothing. as time goes by, if the plane did crash in the ocean, you would expect to find a significant amount of debris floating there. at first it would be very tightly clustered together on the surface. as time goes by, it would spread across a wider and wider search of ocean. that makes it less useful for locating wreckage on the bottom but increases the chances that something will be found. remember, the indian ocean is a busy ocean. crossed by all kinds of shipping and fishing traffic. so you

let's bring in jeff ranieri. is there any rain in sight. >> reporter: doesn't look good the next couple of weeks. last rain was april 4th and of course the entire state is in a drought. the rain belt is in to canada and washington. we have high pressure sitting just off shore of california. that's sending the storm activity well to the north. so at best i have scoured the forecast models. the next possibility of any storm system wouldn't be until april 27th through the 29th. that's a long way out. we will continue to watch that. no doubt the chance of rain dramatically decrease through the next couple of weeks. >>> as we try to conserve water, there's a leak in san jose spilling gallons of water as we speak. a water main has been leaking for two days and water officials have done nothing to stop it. we have a live camera at the leak. it is on a residential street. this is rosewood avenue. neighbors say it started as a three-inch crack on saturday. but as we pull out here you can get perspective. it h grown to thr

jeff? pam -- the ferry -- carrying 476 people -- was sailing to the southern island of je-ju when it began a distress call after it began listing to one side. the korean coast guard says the ship ended up being 95 percent submerged. local media ran photos showing the partially submerged ship almost completely on its side. 16 helicopters flew overhead and 34 rescue vessels were sent to the area to help in rescue operations. the south korean navy special forces and an underwater demolition team helped rescue passengers that jumped into the ocean as the ship went down. while most people on the ferry are safe, the news wasn't all good. two people have died -- one, a 27-year-old woman named park ji-yeong, and the other a 22- year-old female crew member. 14 more were injured. .one of them seriously. but the big story were the rescue operations. at this point, 178 of the passengers on the ferry are safe on land, and almost 370 have been rescued. one student told the local media that he jumped into
