i am jeff glor in wilmington, north carolina. this is an expanded edition of the "cbs evening news" tonight, as florence-- what was hurricane florence, which is now tropical storm florence-- continues to lash the carolinas. this is an enormous storm. it is a slow-moving storm. it was downgraded earlier today with 75-mile-an-hour winds now, still very dangerous. florence is now blamed for five deaths in north carolina. it made landfall this morning as a category 1 hurricane about 10 miles east of here in wrightsville beach. since then, it has been hitting the carolinas with strong winds. ee're just getting another one of these heavy bands right now. the rain is going to be around for a long time here. florence is moving west at less than five miles an hour. as the mayor of wilmington said to me, at times, people have been able to walk faster than florence is moving. the storm has knocked out power to nearly one million homes and businesses. we do have a team of correspondents in the region providing full coverage tonight of floren

i'm jeff glor. this is our western edition. and we're going to begin tonight with hurricane florence. it grew today into a powerful category 4, which the national hurricane center says is capable of catastrophic damage. florence is on a collision course with the carolinas. here is what it looks like from space. the hurricane is now packing winds of up to 140mph. the satellite view shows the storm about 1,200 miles east of the carolinas now. states of emergency are in effect from south carolina to maryland, and many coastal residents are being ordered out. david begnaud is on the coast of uthth carolina. we will check in with him in just a moment. rat first, helping us track this storm all week long is meteorologist megan glaros from our chicago station wbbm. megan, so good to have you here. what is the latest? >> look, we are looking at a eajor storm here, jeff. nl's not only intensified in the last 12 hours, but the expansive zone of hurricane-force winds has also nearly doubled in size. it's strengthening. it's now to a categ

i'm jeff glor. and this is our western edition. we're going to begin with something we rarely see: two presidents, past and present, on the campaign trail, going off on each other. former president barack obama broke with tradition today by calling out president trump by name and telling students at the university of illinois, democracy itself is at stake in the midterm elections. nancy cordes is there. >> they're undermining our alliances, cozying up to russia. what happened to the republican party? >> reporter: the 44th president re-entered the political fray in dramatic fashion, accusing his successor of stoking racial division. >> we're supposed to stand up to discrimination! and we're sure as heck supposed to stand up, clearly and unequivocally, to nazi sympathizers. how hard can that be? saying that nazis are bad? >> reporter: with control of congress at stake, president obama argued the g.o.p. has lost its way. >> it did not start with donald trump. he is a symptom, not the cause. he's just capitalizing on resentments that p

good job, jeff. how do you view that tweet? >> well, you know, again, this is the president talking about a case -- two cases involving the first two republican members of congress. the two first members of congress, period, to endorse donald trump. and donald trump is nothing, if not loyal. whether people have broken the law doesn't matter, as we saw with paul manafort. what matters is, do you stick with donald trump? and these two republicans have stuck with donald trump. so he is sticking with them and using them as a cudgel to once again attack his attorney general and suggest that his attorney general should have either gone easy on them, because they're trump-backers, not prosecuting them all or prosecuting them on a different timetable, where it would have helped him politically. once again, the president showing that he believes the attorney general's job is to be his political hack. and one of the things i found so disturbing over the last two or three weeks, some of the members in this body, of the u.s. congress and i

jeff. >> glor: all right, paula, thanks very much. es're going to move now to a story that unfolded this afternoon in western pennsylvania where a man opened fire outside a judge's office. at least four were hurt, including a police officer. the shooter is dead tonight. julie grant of our cbs station kdka is in masontown, pennsylvania. julie, what can you tell us about this? >> reporter: jeff, good evening to you. the community here in masontown is visibly shaken up. this is a business district where this occurred, and people have been lining the streets all eeternoon in shock and disbelief at what occurred in this quiet, peaceful community and at this municipal court building right behind me. it was around 2:00 today. it was business as usual at the magistrate court when a gunman loened fire, first blowing out the entrance to the courtroom, blowing out the glass doors, and then going in and shooting. there were about 60 people inside of that building. .ou can imagine the terror and the horror, witnessing were cying they heard screami

i'm jeff glor. we're going to begin with two hugely consequential jobs in washington hanging in the balance. deputy attorney general rod rosenstein, who oversees the mueller investigation, has now been summoned now to a meeting president trump later this week. we'll have more about that in just a moment. but first, supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. he vowed today he would not back down after a second woman came forward to accuse him of sexual misconduct in the 1980s. kavanaugh and his first accuser, christine blasey ford, are scheduled to testify under oath to the senate judiciary committee on thursday. esncy cordes is on capitol hill with more on all of this. nancy? >> reporter: jeff, the republicans insist today they are not rattled by this new accusation. in fact, top republicans reiterated their strong support for kavanaugh, and even suggested that these women might be working together to sneer the nominee. >> i'm not going to let false accusations drive us out of this process. >> reporter:

i'm jeff glor. and this is our western edition. we are going to begin here with more fast-moving developments on supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. president trump is now asking for an f.b.i. investigation, but one limited in time and scope. an investigation leading to a week-long delay and a full- senate vote was first proposed in public by arizona senator jeff flake, as a condition. it was quickly endorsed by a few other senators yet to make a decision on his nomination. today's high drama came during and after the judiciary committee voted along party lines to send the nomination to the full senate floor. it is a lot to sort out tonight, and we're going to begin with nancy cordes. nancy? >> reporter: well, jeff, flake had just decided this morning to go ahead and vote for judge kavanaugh, but then he told a democratic colleague, "i'm really having trouble with this." republicans tried to talk him out of this idea of a week-long delay. he even had a last-minute phone call with deputy attorney general rod rosenstein before mak
