author jeff quinn. you open your most recent book, waco, with this quote from rick perlstein, the historian. a fog of cross-cut motives and narratives, the complexity that defies storybook simplicity at a that is usually the way history happens. i think the quote is the most cogent of ever heard. rick does a tremendous job himself and it's true. know historic event happens in a vacuum. it's tied to many other things. and that's the fascination in research and writing on narrative, nonfiction, history. what i read a quote from you as well, and this is from 2021 in the cleburne times review. a lot of people no longer want to buy nonfiction to learn things. they want nonfiction books to reflect what they already believe. want books to reinforce their opinions. they want books that tell them everything they believe is absolutely right and that the other side is even worse than they thought. if you take a look at the bestseller list for nonfiction, for the last several years, there's three categories. genera

jeff: sure. don't love that word because it sounds a little cultish or something. it just means deep dive journalism. in this case, -- i have done different kinds of projects based on interviews -- in this case, it felt most important just to be in the rooms with young people who are incarcerated. learning that or playing board games or playing basketball and just be there. i think it was called the journalism of hanging out. i really was able, through a lot of generosity of administrators and a lot of trust of family and kids, i was able to have access to these facilities. yes, just be in rooms that sometimes participate in classes. lunchtime, just talk to the young men and young women sometimes, and just be there throughout each day, every day almost. susan: the time period you chose was interrupted by covid. how did that impact the work you were able to? jeff: it was really hard for these incarcerated kids because teachers weren't allowed in. i certainly was not allowed in the facility anymore

jeff was talking about it. the higher snow level. that brings a whole new set of problems when it comes to the snowpack that is already in place the last couple of weeks. you've had the lighter snowfall here which doesn't put a lot of weight on rooftops. about a foot of that snow is about a third of the weight of heavier wet snow. now watch what happens as that snow piles up. it's a difference of having two pickup trucks on your roof versus six. and once you get above 20 pounds per square foot that could lead to rooftop and ceiling failures, and we've been seeing a lot of this on social media today for places like truckee and the tahoe basin. a lot of folks taking this down time to clear some of those rooftops because on the way rain and wet snow will likely increase those weight loads on a lot of structures up there and these types of patterns we could see a lot of roof collapses coming in heavy wet snow -- >> a fascinating graphic. this is normal. >> normal. >> and right now there are places in truckee and tahoe that have this weig

let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. it seems like it's kind of a carbon copy here. what do we expect tomorrow? >> the thing i really think is going to be different about what we're dealing with right now is the atmospheric river. there is one out here. you can see it in the pacific, but this is all going to be heading down towards southern california and points to the south. so we are not expected to get hit with the atmospheric river. but the center of the storm system out here, that's what's going to move in for us. as we roll through the overnight hours, you can see some of that rain bubbling up here at 2:00 in the morning. we'll be under widespread rain at 6:00 a.m., so commute is going to be pretty heavy. the widespread rain is going to clear off faster. it moves out to the north and east by 9:00 in the morning. we're going to be under these scattered areas of rain as we head through tomorrow evening and also into wednesday morning. rainfall totals, a half to three-quarters. i think at this point we're going to be okay with these rain totals. we may have some i

cbs' jeff pegues is here to start us off tonight with what he has learned.al complaint mentioning this device did pose a significant risk to aircraft and passengers. >> it certainly did. but in this case, the security precautions at the airport really worked. and law enforcement was able to avert what could have been a threat to the aircraft and the passengers on board. investigators say this is mark muffley, caught on lehigh valley international airport's surveillance cameras monday pulling two black pieces of luggage, and allegedly booked to fly on allegiant airlines flight 201 bound for orlando. according to court documents, muffley never got on that flight, but he did check one of the bags. a tsa screening found a circular compound approximately 3 inches in diameter hidden in the lining of the baggage with two fuses attached, plus a mixture of flash powder used in commercial grade fireworks. authorities paged muffley over the airport's public address system, but he left the airport and went home. a bag tag with his name on it helped investigators track h

let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. you said last night that this might happen today, and it happened today. this was pretty intense. almost reminded me of a january storm. >> we really haven't had a break on these strong storms moving in. it's been back-to-back, as we've been saying. storm ranger mobile doppler radar, and we are tracking moderate rain. a heavier pocket through the santa cruz mountains tonight. scattered rain showing up on the radar. we won't have too much left at 11:00. 30 tonight, and by tomorrow morning, we start to get in on some sunshine, andthat sunshine, i know you all want it, and we all need it. it's going to be coming in as we head through tomorrow's forecast. looking good. >> how much rain do we get today and tomorrow? >> 1 to 2 inches with this latest storm system. >> okay. impact on our reservoirs? the good news is all this rain, also good news is the by-product is the reservoirs. >> it has been incredible. look at these numbers here. 102% here lake sonoma. lexington, 95. east bay mud right

cbs's jeff pegues starts us off tonight.ou, jeff. >> reporter: yeah, this report is really stunning, margaret. it slams the louisville police department for what it calls a culture of racial discrimination, claiming some of brul tactics for blacks.f their >> this conduct is unacceptable. it is heartbreaking. >> reporter: the scathing doj report concluded that the louisville metro police department doesn't always protect and serve did you instead often disrespects the people it is sworn to protect. among the investigation's findings officers treat blacks and whites differently. while driving blacks are nearly four times as likely to be cited for improperly tinted windows and five times more for improper tags. the abuses extend to the treatment of the disabled and even sex assault victims. the report also says that officers often use excessive force such as neck restraints, k-9s and tasers. >> some have videotaped themselves throwing drinks at pedestrians from their cars, insulted people with disabilities, and called black peo

let's bring in jeff ranieri, our chief meteorologist, there's some of the frozen decks here, and jeff, this is monday, and this is just the beginning, without being too dramatic of what could be an intense seven days ahead of us. >> it's good to get that early warning that we are looking at real severe weather headed our way later on this week. what we're dealing with right now, it is no big deal. we've got scattered areas of rain. be careful for that tonight, it's moving towards the north and east. more rain moving into martinez through 6:37. through the evening, scattered areas of rain, and we're going to stay with that through tomorrow morning's forecast. keep the umbrella handy. the main event, the big event at least in our forecast is going to come later this week with a stronger storm meeting up with an atmospheric river. it's that subtropical moisture boost that takes a moderate storm system and ratchets it up a couple more notches, so thursday and friday, strong storm and a second one after that early next week. check this out. as that gets here thursday and friday, i want to
