let's bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. i'm just looking on my twitter feed, san lorenzo, oakland, san jose, fremont. of course everyone on the peninsula feeling this quake tonight. >> really getting our attention this evening. again, map perspective on this right here in the peninsula. originally reported as a 4.1, then downgraded to a 3.9. that's pretty typical to get those adjustments in that initial strength. it does look like this is on the san andreas fault. there's a few smaller faults right near there. the interesting thing about the location, it happened right underneath based on the gps mapping of the san francisco airport. so even though only a 3.9, you have to wonder if they're doing some sort of checks in and around the airport with all of the equipment and everything, of course, and those flights coming into and out of that airport. fairly shallow with a depth of eight miles. here's the other thing that always gets my attention. there have been no aftershocks with this 3.9. so the big question we always get in

jeff ranieri is now here with our updated forecast. how are we looking, jeff? >> it certainly was hot out there. take a look at some of the warmest numbers here across the bay area today. we managed to get up to 97 degrees in st. helena. los gatos 93. san francisco an eye-popping 85. real close to some records right there in san francisco. the one spot we did set a record is santa rosa with 93. old record 92 set back in 2020. where do we go from here? we still have one more day in the heat with the hot area of high pressure. then by friday and saturday, this cooler system down here, that's going to move in and get this hot air out of here. so again, one more day of this heat with us. you'll see the forecast as we roll through tomorrow. we'll start it off with some 60s. then by the early afternoon we're back into the low 90s. and i think a few more spots getting into the upper 90s through the inland valleys by tomorrow afternoon. and at the coastline, we begin with 60s. mostly clear skies. this is for half moon bay. then we're up to 80 by noon. so a word of warn

chief meteorologist jeff rainier has been tracking it for us, what a turn these guys all of a sudden, when we had been so sunny and clear last week. >> huge, we're looking at a drop of 30 degrees as we get a look right now, satellite radar picture, it's not a very big storm, overall the colder temperatures in the cloud cover coming in, those are the two things that all of us are dealing with today, but it has been a refreshing change for us, a look right now at the skinning doppler radar, we have showers over the santa cruz mountains, a little batch out here toward the east bay and these showers would continue into discovery bay through 5:30, 6:00 tonight. be ready for the roads to get wet, here. is look at the rain totals, not very much, trace amounts to .2 throughout the bay area, the temperatures, look at how much they have dropped, we had upper 90s in santa rosa just a few days ago, now we're on 63, 68 in napa, 74 right here in san jose. coming up, we'll take a look at another system offshore and what that's going to mean for rain chances tomorrow, i've got all the details on that

let's go head over now to our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. jeff, it was hot out there today, in the 90s. did we break any records? >> well, there's one spot that did break a record. a lot of us got close, but santa rosa hit 96. that broke the record of 95. that was set last year. you mentioned san francisco, 87. record of 90. we got real close there. certainly very unusual for us. >> especially for october. >> yeah. >> a lot of people are just ready for things to cool down. will it cool down soon? >> we've got some great news on that front. we're tracking that area of hot high pressure moving off towards the east. this cooler system to the south is going to move over us for tomorrow, bring back some morning fog, drop temperatures at least 5 to 10 degrees, a little more for a few other locations. by tomorrow afternoon, 3:00 p.m., instead of 90s, we're looking at 70s and 80s. beyond this, by this weekend, we are holding on to the chance here of some showers as we head into sunday's forecast. now, it doesn't look like a lot, but trace amounts to
