let's bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. our first week of fall, jeff, it's like a blast of summer. it is. it's coming back here pretty strong. to start off our monday, we just got the brand new update here on those temperatures today. and you'll be able to see we got up as hot as 100 in santa rosa. that was good enough for a new record. morgan hill 99, a toasty 95, in san jose and 94 in sunnyvale. now the fog is building back at the coastline, and we briefly got up to 88 in downtown san francisco for just one hour. but with that fog, we are now seeing more dramatic drops to 77. a cool 66 and half moon bay got to love these microclimates. then you get out here to livermore and we're holding on to 96 for tomorrow morning. i think most importantly, those hottest inland valleys will get some relief here between 4 to 6 a.m, upper 60s and low 70s. then we're back at it. it is going to be very warm 86 by 11 a.m. we'll talk more about this hot area of high pressure, plus the latest on the tropics. if you're doing any traveling, you

jeff is always blustery. yes. yes, it was cold. yeah. it was just so enjoyable to get outside here and start off our week with those fall, like temperatures. fall is officially just around the corner. we'll get here by this weekend. and before we get to that, we're going to look at some more cooler temperatures. and also the chance here of additional rain chances this week. so let's take it out here to the satellite radar picture and the system we've been following that brought us in the chillier weather and also the cloud cover. it's spinning right here. you can see that counterclockwise spin around that area of low pressure. so look at this currently 72 in livermore. so numbers are down about 20 degrees from what we experienced last week. it's just so nice to get in on this. after over 15 days of one hundredths across the inland valleys. so here's the deal though. the way this is setting up right now, we're still looking at that circulation around the system, pushing in some showers here tonight to northern california. so right now it'

let's bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. jeff, where do we see some of those showers? i actually got an alert that rain might be falling soon. and what's the rest of the weekend looking like? well, we did see a little bit of that shower activity, especially along the coastline. the system we've been following is continuing to move off towards the south, taking some of the largest rain chances with it and overall totals coming in like this. we got up to six hundredths of an inch here in pacifica, castro valley, 200, san francisco 200. livermore 100th of an inch and oakland 100. so just a small drop in the overall rain bucket to kind of get this year going. as we take a look at the doppler radar, most active right now over the sierra, we've seen quite a few lightning strikes. so thankfully there has been some rainfall with this to help out the fire danger. there's also some snow mixing in around yosemite. they could see about 1 to 4in here as we head through the next 24 hours, but as far as the bay area goes right now, we are currently dry on this scan. so when it comes

i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. i'll take a look at the weather pattern out here in the pacific, and what it could mean for us over the election. that was during the pandemic back in 2020. yeah, and nbc bay area investigation found that four years later, where we are now, the u.s. mail is still slow, particularly in swing states. nbc's noah pransky reports. last presidential election, the mail was bad, but, you know, it was during a pandemic, which makes it hard to believe. by some measures, it's even worse. today, on the eve of another nail biter of an election. election 2024 make every mail ballot count. but you don't. we'll come back to some very upset secretaries of state in a minute. first, though, we found not only is the postal service falling short of its own 93% target for delivering local mail within two days, but some of the slowest mail in the country right now is in swing states. as of this summer, just 86% of first class mail in north carolina was delivered on time. wisconsin just 71%, and georgia. few

thanks, jeff. well, it's called the pacific garbage patch. a group spearheading a massive effort to clean up all the plastic in the pacific ocean descended on san francisco today, bringing with them an announcement and call to action. the nonprofit group put a timeline and price tag on what they say it will take to clean up the oceans. nbc bay area's ian cull spoke with that team. and ian, first, take us through what they do. yes. so the ocean cleanup is a nonprofit that's working to clear the oceans of plastic and their team has two strategies. one is intercepting garbage flowing in rivers before it makes it to the sea. like you can see here in a time lapse during a flash flood in guatemala. and the second and larger project is cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean. they've spent the past six years focused on the great pacific garbage patch. now it's an area twice the size of texas than the pacific ocean, where there's a large concentration of plastic just beneath the surface and the ocean cleanup says they've already pulled

let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. talk about how hot we are right now and what's to come tomorrow. well, we have just one more day left of these hot, hot temperatures across the inland valleys, and then we'll be on a downward trend into the upcoming weekend. so a brand new update on these numbers. these are the official highs for these cities. walnut creek 103. livermore hitting 100. morgan hill also right here at 100. now, when you compare these temperatures and other temperatures that are historical sites here that have records going back over 100 years, it was not good enough for records, and thankfully so we would have had to get up to 113 here in livermore. here's the other thing. today the fog came in certainly stronger than expected. so san francisco, no 80s for you, and i'm sure you're glad about that. just 68 here for the high. so through tonight for the inland valleys we have 80s coming in eight, nine and 10:00. so a warm night and then some 70s here overnight. here's the heat advisory still up for the north
