but i am up here for a reason and i am following jeff. that is we tend to think of climate change as something that is a threat multiplier or something that takes a festering problem and turns it into an acute problem after a natural disaster. i want to make the argument up here and i wish i didn't have such a good example to use but i do. we've seen hurricane helene do some of the worst damage in an area i've heard described as a climate refuge or a climate haven. i want to make the argument that we might just see this in areas we don't expect -- we expect but areas we don't expect. we could see the stabilization in places where we don't see it coming. systems are not going to look into the future the way they have in the past. we are going to find people in our own country and other countries in harm's way and subject to destabilization in ways that have become security threats. because of climate change. we can talk more about this as the panel goes on but i want to throw out one thing, just to tell you, how this is working out in this

how are we looking on this halloween eve, jeff? well, we do have that storm system approaching right now. as we get you a look at the satellite radar picture, you'll see the center of the storm system is just off to the north. the cold front that's moving down away from the center of the storm. that's going to sweep across tonight and bring us that chance for some rainfall already beginning to pick up on some activity around redding and eureka. so it will take a little bit of time to get here. once we hit about 9:00 tonight, we could get some rainfall here up towards cloverdale. guerneville, parts of marin, napa, sonoma county. some spotty showers. then this would move off towards the south over the east bay and peninsula by 2:00 in the morning. and then as we head through 7:00 in the morning, we would begin to clear out with some sunshine. so, so far, so good on your halloween forecast. so overall, what we're looking at is those on and off rain chances tonight into early tomorrow morning. a second system friday into saturday which

ian, let's turn things over to chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. and, jeff, i know that you've been monitoring milton very closely. what are we seeing now? it's made landfall. what happens next? well, winds are beginning to go down a little bit, but still a very strong and powerful storm. as we take you to the current view, you can see how this just covers the entire state. the thing that we're noting about this storm system right now is that landfall happening here around bradenton and sarasota. that's just south of tampa. this is a very compact center eyewall. so hurricane force winds stretch out about 35 miles from the center. so not only those 115 to 1 20 mile per hour winds in bradenton and sarasota, but also right up towards tampa. now, tropical storm force winds that 73mph in less extend out over 200 miles from the center and that's why most of the state is going to be feeling the impacts of this as we continue through tonight and tomorrow. so let's get you the latest stats on this. with that official landfall happening over the past half ho

what comes next, jeff? we are going to be looking at some much cooler temperatures, maybe even some rainfall coming in that 7-day forecast. but we did manage to set even more records. look at this up to a hot 102 in concord, a record tied one in livermore. also a new one in santa rosa, san jose, 102 new record and san francisco up to a hot 92. now, when you look at the heat overall, san jose had the hottest seven day stretch in history. we average 100.1 degrees hottest since records started there in 1906. but of course all the bay area got in on this heat. it was eight days with on and off records, the hottest livermore 108, the hottest at the coast san francisco 9525 days this summer at 100 and hotter when we usually average about ten. now, historically, the last days of 100 is october the 15th. it does look like we could stick with that trend and start to see those numbers sliding down. in fact, right now we're anywhere from 2 to 16 degrees cooler. i'll have more details on this system out here. and that
