thank you jeff. well, up next, new details in that butte county school shooting that critically wounded two kindergartners. investigators revealing the gunman's criminal ties to the bay area.e'll w that left a five and six year old in critical condition. it happened yesterday in butte county, about 3.5 hours northeast of the bay area tonight. the sheriff says the young boys are fighting for their lives. they're identified as roman mendez and elias wolford both attended kindergarten at the feather river adventist school near oroville. that's where the shooting happened. just after 1:00 yesterday afternoon. investigators say a chp officer responded within two minutes to find the gunman dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. just two hours ago, the sheriff gave an update on the two victims. they have a very long road ahead of them in terms of recovery. it's very likely that they are going to have to have a number of surgeries as going forward. but the fact that they are currently still with us, i thi

as jeff told us. i think that was a 4.4. you mentioned jeff. yeah. and they've even seen some up to about 4.7, i believe so. and i counted it was like 30 aftershocks. is that common to have that many? it is when you get a when you get something the size of a 7.0, you're going to see possibly aftershocks continue for 1 to 2 weeks, maybe even longer. this area has had strong earthquakes. they've dealt with tsunamis. but this was a big wake up call here for a lot of the bay area. today we got the alerts on our phones. a lot of you went into action and did exactly what you needed to do. so. good. good job on all of that. let's go ahead and bring it into that microclimate forecast. and we are going to show you again that epicenter just off the northern coastline. tsunami warning has been canceled. there was no destructive or damaging waves at the coast, but it was only a mile below the earth's surface. and that's where all the concern came from. this morning, we're going to take more looks at the aftershocks coming up in about ten minutes or so, but i do

we want to bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. jeff, just to reiterate again, this is really rare to see this type of tornado in this location with so much damage also. completely. you know, normally in the bay area, if we get a tornado, it's an ef zero. it maybe touches down for a brief moment, but this one stuck around. and as we reported, as we saw in the video, it was damaging out there. pretty frightening for anyone. we're so lucky nobody got killed. saturday at 139, touching down and on the ground for five minutes. that is the power of this tornado. we had winds up to 90mph rated an ef one. the path of this went for over a quarter of a mile. and as we reported there just a few injuries. so how common are tornadoes in california? since 1891, 480 of them have been reported. we average about 11 per year in california. highest risk november to march. most common in the central valley, where we get a lot of strong winds coming up from the south.he central valley really kind of helps those to get spawned off. strongest bay area to

but i am up here for a reason and i am following jeff. that is we tend to think of climate change as something that is a threat multiplier or something that takes a festering problem and turns it into an acute problem after a natural disaster. i want to make the argument up here and i wish i didn't have such a good example to use but i do. we've seen hurricane helene do some of the worst damage in an area i've heard described as a climate refuge or a climate haven. i want to make the argument that we might just see this in areas we don't expect -- we expect but areas we don't expect. we could see the stabilization in places where we don't see it coming. systems are not going to look into the future the way they have in the past. we are going to find people in our own country and other countries in harm's way and subject to destabilization in ways that have become security threats. because of climate change. we can talk more about this as the panel goes on but i want to throw out one thing, just to tell you, how this is working out in this

how cold it's going to get, jeff.he temperatures are continuing to tumble here pretty quickly over the past couple of hours. we have this area of high pressure. it's keeping that storm track to the north. so generally clear skies tonight and certainly dry. and that's going to allow plenty of 30s across the inland valleys. you can see our frost advisories and freeze warnings stretching from clear lake all let me get you more details on. this new year's eve. and also when rain returns in your microclimate forecast. and here it is tomorrow morning. i think the general rule, once you get away from the coast and the bay will certainly be widespread 30s. we're not expecting a lot of locations to really go below freezing at this point. i think we'll be at an average here of 37 in the tri-valley peninsula, 41 in the south bay at 39, also going to those upper 30s across the east bay and the north bay right here at 36. not going to happen with 30s in san francisco. that's just because the ocean in the bay helps to kind of insul

okay, jeff, we'll see you shortly.onight, you might have felt it some shaking in sonoma county, a 3.9 earthquake hit about an hour ago just before 10 p.m. the epicenter between santa rosa and clear lake. you can see the map here. this is in the geysers. as we know, it's considered an active earthquake region here in northern california. no reports, thankfully, of any damage or injuries. also, a magnitude 5.8 quake hit nevada this afternoon. it rattled parts of northern california and here in the bay area that earthquake struck just after 3 p.m. near the town of yerington. that's about 65 miles southeast of carson city, so east of lake tahoe as well. people in the bay area told the usgs that they did feel it, along with people in the sacramento area and the central valley. you just get an earthquake? yeah. like i thought maybe i following david david muir. yeah. that's a pretty good earthquake. yep. and that was during a council meeting. city council meeting there in carson city. at least 12 aftershocks have been report

jeff, is the weather cooperating?e're going to have a few speed bumps, so to speak, here when it comes to that forecast and what you may be dealing with. as we get a look right now, we do have some drizzle offshore and some fog and then the fog also developing the thickest here through the central valley. it's not extremely bad right now in the bay area. it's running anywhere between 3 to 10 mile visibility. we still may have some delays here at san jose, san francisco and oakland tomorrow morning just because of the low cloud cover we are expecting. but overall, the worst of it, if you're doing any traveling, is going to be here across the central valley from redding to sacramento, all the way down to fresno. you'll want to watch out for visibilities. that could be a quarter mile and less. now, if you're not here but you're doing traveling, it's going to be dry here throughout the state. we're not expecting any kind of rain storms. we'll have 71 in san diego, sunny skies, 79 in palm springs going to be great there. u
