we turn next to meteorologist jeff berardelli at our miami station, wfor. ff, it seems to be an intense period lately in terms of oes.adoes. any kind of uncommon or even wecord-setting pace we're on? >> this past week has been txceptionally active and the reason why is we've had basically a stalled jet stream right across the plain state and ve ohio heal, and that's been causing a lot of severe weather. in fact, take a look at this 60aphic. just this week alone, we've had 115 reports of tornadoes, about d0 reports of wind damage, and about 700 reports of large hail. but take a look at this. we started off extraordinarily slow with only 18 tornadoes during the month of march. irmal is 80, and that is only 25% of normal. so, although it has been very active this past week, it hirtainly hasn't been an active y haon, at least starting out. s axelrod: okay, still a lot of ofngerous weather out there. who needs to be concerned about what's in this country over the next 24 hours? >> the storm system is finally middle east to the southeast and toward the east. the m

more on this we turn to jeff berardelli of our miami station wfor. jeff, why was the situation on friday so unusual? >> well, this particular tornado was a fairly disorganized tornado. we call it a multiple votice tornado and it was jumping around from place to place so it was hard for the stormtrackers to track it. in addition to that at times it was wrapped in rain so it was very difficult to see and therefore a lot of people ended up in the path of this dangerous tornado. >> jeff: meanwhile, i want to ask you about one other weather issue, hurricane season started yesterday. and already there is some activity in the gulf of mexico. what's happening? >> yeah, we have a big blowup of showers and thunderstorms and lots of tropical moisture in the southern part of the gulf of mexico just to the east of cancun, in the yucatan channel. all that moisture is gathering. as of right now it does not look like it's forming into an organized tropical system, although there is a small chance of that. more likely it looks like it's going to bring copious amounts

jeff berardelli is tracking this. where do we expect to know and who's going to be hardest hit? >> it's going to move up the carolina coast into new york city. it looks like rain will be a possibility. also the threat of tornados. let's go to the map and see where it's located right now. pretty close to south carolina. it's racing to the northeast at 20 miles an hour. the winds have subsided a bit, only 45 miles an hour. by this afternoon it's over north carolina. overnight the storm is located off the coast of new york city and new england and it's in canada by tomorrow afternoon. the good news is the conditions will certainly improve by tomorrow afternoon. looking at the radar and satellite, the watch box. certainly the possibility of isolated tornadoes. heavy rain up and down the eastern seaboard, also into boston. how much rain are we going to see? notice the strip of yellow and orange. that's as much as 5 to 8 inches of flooding rainfall. flooding is possible, charlie and norah, today. >>> that's where president obama is meeting his chinese counterpart later today. the summ

jeff berardelli is tracking it. >> the exstream heat is about as extreme as it gets. as far as flooding in the east, we are expecting a few inches of rainfall. so first thing's first, let's talk about a pattern. a very amplified jet stream. the kind of jet stream you would expect to see in january and february. not necessarily the kind of jet stream you would see so late in the season. that means a big heat ringdge across the west. with temperatures in phoenix around 113. las vegas around 115. death valley 130. as we just mentioned, the all-time record high on earth is 134. the last time it got to 130 in death valley 100 years ago. in the east it will be cool across the great lakes. lots of heavy rain up and down the i-95 corridor. some places will see probably as much as 5 inches of rainfall and flash flooding is possible in some spots this weekend. >> 130 degrees. that is just a breathtaking number literally. >>> cheers in the senate gallery and cries of yes we can after the sweeping immigration bill was passed thursday. the overall is far from certain. nancy cordes
