meteorologist jeff berardelli is tracking the nation's weather. heat waves, hurricanes, we got it all here. >> we are breaking records left and right. elsa is really breaking record pace right now. it is the earliest fifth named storm in the atlantic basin, beating last year's pace. and we are six weeks ahead of time for the first average hurricane which would normally be during the middle of august. now the only good news is, first of all, it's moving fast and is fairly weak, winds around 75 miles per hour. look at that pace. moving at 31 miles per hour. that is record pace for the caribbean. but the good news with that is the faster it moves, the less rain it dumps on the caribbean islands. so the system's going to quickly move northwestward. it will eventually interact with cuba, that should weaken it some, becoming a tropical storm. look at monday. rain and wind already spreading into south florida including the miami beach area. then the system kind of takes a right hook and moves up along the west coast. right now it looks like tampa. it cou

climate specialist jeff berardelli tracking elsa and another threat created by hot weather in the westavy rain gusts to 70 miles an hour, lyle and cape cod as the storm moves out but it's moving at 31 miles an hour so it early afternoon. take a look at the west. once again week after week we are talking about another heat dome. the good news is this one is further south so it's not over seattle, portland and vancouver but the bad news is this is an extreme heat wave on top of what is the worst drought in modern history. look at these numbers, 119 is possible in vegas today. watch what happens overnight tonight, it doesn't go down very much. so there's no relief. death valley in the morning on sunday morning is going to be 104 degrees. during the afternoon, 130 degrees is possible. redding could also break an all-time record at 119 degrees. so unfortunately we keep seeing these heat waves, you know, week after week. and i can't even say that this is necessarily the new normal because it looks like it'll just continue to get worse until we stop heating the planet. >> oh, jeff, thank you.

jeff berardelli is tracking the weather. good morning. >> good morning. good morning, everyone. go again. another major heat dome, keep seeing it weekend after weekend, week after week. this one building across the rockies into montana. some parts of montana may see seven days in a row of temperatures 100-plus. now, as that ridge of high pressure, that heat dome builds, the western side moisture is going to surge north. normally moisture would be good for california. only problem is we're going to see thunderstorms without the rain. that means dry lightning and a fire weather watch is out because on top of all these drought conditions, the ground is really dry. we could see more fires. we have plenty of them. now this historic drought extends into the northern plains states. on top of that, look at these temperatures. tomorrow, 104 in glasgow, montana. monday, 107 degrees. now this long-term drought and these repetitive -- these frequent heat waves have consequences. one of those consequences this year, the smallest oat crop is predicted since 1886. now west of that in yellowsto
