want to bring in jeff corwin. author of the new book "sharks." f, to look at you holding this lion when it was, i guess, just a couple weeks old on the ellen show. so sad what has happened now. how surprised are you by this? >> well, i'm incredibly surprised whenever a tragedy like this unfolds, anderson. these are powerful creatures and they possess incredible strength and incredible predatory skill and i think that's what you have to remember here. there's a big difference between a small 3-month-old defenseless cub relying on human beings for nurturement and for care and a 350-pound creature that pretty much sits at the top of the food chain. >> even though, and the pictures we are seeing you with ellen on the show, even though this cub was hand raised, as you said, these animals are hardwired. it is part of their dna. it's part of who they are that as they grow they -- i mean, they are hunters. >> well, there certainly is a big difference between a lion living out in the wilds of the savannah that would look at human beings as a potential comp

jeff corwin is holding him.to kathrine herr, yo are outside the gates what is going on now? >> they arrived 20 minutes ago to pick up the body of the woman who was killed here by the lion. there are deputies and investigators still on scene here. >> you have been inside this cat haven in the past you even saw this animal? >> i did. >> this is basically a sanctuary for large cats. they have lions up here and tigers and cheetahs and jaguars. but this facility is open to the public and they were not open today. no visitors on sight. but you go in and there is a road of then closures. each is basically closed off by reinforce reinforced fences. and i was there and got close to this lion. the lion seemed docile and the one you heard from had actually reached through the fence and was skrocratching the lion behi the other. it did not seem aggressive in anyway. the male shares the enclosure with a female as well. we haven't been told yet where the female was during all of this. >> thank you. i want to bring in jeff cor

also joining me is jeff corwin. welcome to you all.st of all, today, and to wendy, my deepest condolences of what happened at the sank chew ware. from what everybody has said, it's a very well-run place. things like this haven't happened in the past and it must have hit you all in a very devastating way. you've got the cage there. a lot of people have been asking. how could this have happened? and i think you're able to basically show us. and why don't you just talk me through what you believe caused the tragic death of this young girl? >> sure. thank you for having us on the show. it's nice toe be able to at least come out and be able to have people see and give an explanation of what's going on. again, it's been a tragedy for us here and our family here at the cat haven and anderson and hansen family. dianna was very dear to us. it's been a great experience to be able to have this friendship and be able to work through these sorrow times here. i'm going to take you through and show you what happened when we showed up at the enclosure

i want to bring in jeff corwin, wildlife expert, host of abc's "ocean mysteries" and author of the bookjoins us by skype. our affiliate is reporting this is a lion you may have held at one point when you were on ellen's show a few years ago. i know you're not sure if it was the same lion, but as we just heard, the statement i'm looking at from the cat haven, this lion was raised as a cub from 8 weeks. school children went to this place all the time to learn about lions. are you shocked by this attack? >> i think it's incredibly shocking when we see a tragedy like this unfold. these are very, very powerful creatures, and an animal like this could have a really good disposition, maybe a great animal as an advocate for a species, as an endangered creature from africa, but the truth is, it is powerful. it is wild. they warrant a tremendous amount of respect. >> do you think this lion could have gotten more aggressive as he grew up or is there a risk even with an animal as you said that appears in most situations to be extremely docile? >> this is a creature that is naturally hardwired to be
