northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg is in the courtroom today and joins us li f about what he saw and heard. jeff? jeff: well, leon, a dramatic moment in court this afternoon. when one of the victims sue duncan was asked to identify the suspect. she stood up in the witness box. pointed out andrew schmuhl and said that is the person who committed the crime. the attorney said he was posing at a law enforcement officer and carrying a fake badge. the type of badge you would find at a bachelorette party. so with sexually suggestive words and images. it was dinner time on sunday november 9, 2014, when the prosecutors say andrew schmuhl busted through the front door of the mclean home of leo fisher and sue duncan. wearing a french coat, flashing a fake badge. shot at fisher. what followed was a three-hour nightmare torture session. this is about revenge, gr this happened two weeks after fisher fired an draw's wife alecia from her lawyer job at a firm in arlington. he said he interrogated fisher. and zip tied the couple hand and feet and stabbed and beat both of them and fired a shot

jeff goldberg has details. high school and elementary school students report a man driving dark pickup truck or sedan creeping up next to them and sometimes talking and sometimes not. last wednesday the recent incident outside washington lee high school. he said one time he honkedhi horn and the other time he was clearly watching her. jeff: the news to make any parent feel like vance does. >> it makes me nervous. jeff: two girls walking home from barrett elementary school when a man in a dark blue pickup truck drove beside them at a slow speed staring. vance's daughter is in the fourth grade at barrett and walks home from school with friends each day. >> we don't want her to grow up being afraid of the world. jeff: in the past few months four incidents with a pickup truck or dark blue van happened outside washington lee high school. the recent case wednesday a block away from the school. in early april driver reportedly told some elementary school kids their mother had sent them to pick them up but the children

northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg back at the scene. jeff? jeff: so many unanswered questions as a result of why this happened yesterday. today is a busy day. a lot of repairs at the they have done a lot of work boarding up the store. they hope to be open this weekend for mother's day. the red trash can is still melted as a result of what happened here in the fire. witnesses tell us the driver of the hummer was parked somewhere in this area. 12:30 yesterday. he put his foot on the gas and drove in the front of the diner. now again, the incredible footage of the aftermath of the crash. witnesses say after the man ran the hummer in the front of the diner, he reversed it and did it again to pin the man from the seem and the wall. people tried to get the driver out of the car. he locked the door. shut the window and then lit it on fire. they were able to get him out after breaking a window. the man is a cook. in his 60's. worked here for two years and been on berriment leave since april 5. why he did it -- bereavement leave since april 5 and whit

"7 on your side" investigator chris papst spent month digging into this story and he joins us now. chris, the story bound to get'm -- bound to get people chris: this started with a tip from a viewer after the speed camera on connecticut avenue in chevy chase caught a police officer speeding. that officer was in his squad car but not on an emergency call. that fine was never paid. the man who tipped us off found out why. that is what got him talking. >> you don't have an argument other than what they were working on the duty and police cruisers. >> that is the courtroom discussion that got lewis' attention. earlier in year, the montgomery county resident was a speed camera court. waiting to fight his ticket. when he watched the man get violation of four police officers dismissed. the officers were not

jeff goldberg stepped out of the courtroom and heard opening statements inside. jeff, fill us in. jeff: leon, an unexpected argument in defense in the opening statements. i want to paint a picture of what is going on inside the courtroom. thomas and melissa mann, the parents of grace mann holding one another inside the courtroom in steven briel look i ahead with a blank look on his face. he said he did kill grace mann. they are not arguing that to be the case but they are saying he is not guilty by reason of insanity. steven briel's family avoids news cameras outside court. inside his attorneys present a specific and a bizarre explanation why he killed 20-year-old mary washington student grace mann in april of 2015. they say he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and on the day of the murder he felt he was threatened by evil forces. the defense said that he texted his mother and say a hail mary and he responded "hail mary full of grace." defense attorneys claim after the text briel felt grace mann posed a serious danger. it doesn't make sense but the evidence will show this

north virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg reports from the fredericksburg courthouse. jeff: both the prosecution and the defense resting their cases today as we now get closer to a verdict in the murder trial of steven briel. the final witness for the defense testifying for several hours this morning, trying to build the steven briel is not guilty by reason of insanity. u.v.a. forensic psychiatrist eileen ryan spent 12-1/2 hours evaluating steven briel and came to the conclusion he did not understand the consequences of his actions when he killed his roommate and fellow mary washington student grace mann in april of 2015. dr. ryan testifying that briel is schizophrenic and leading up to the murder his delusion and paranoia intensified. according to ryan, briel felt a group called "the organization" was trying to kill him and his three female roommates, especially grace mann were planning his murder. grace is the one that is out to kill me, he told ryan. on the day of the murder, while home alone with grace, briel said to her "why are you trying to kill me?" and grace lo

northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg explains the meal tax is just how much more are we talking 4% meal tax. in the neighborhood of $2-$3 if the meal is $50 in that range. the old pub in great falls. you walk inside the pub, you know exactly what owner mike carney thinks of this meal tax. he fought the battle in 192 and will fight it again likely here in 2016. what we are talking about here is the 4% tax that could raise $90 million a year for fairfax county. the bulk of it will likely go to schools but other services as well. quite possibly affordable housing being one of them and police and fire as well. it would all be on all prepared and food and drinks, anything from a sit-down dinner at restaurant or a bar to take-out from a fast food restaurant or grocery store. we have spoken to both sides of the issue and both feel strong beginning be the opposition. >> i do think need money. but i think it should be a fair tax across the county as a whole. to everyone. not just the people who choose to go out to eat. >> we think a meals tax is less of a burden. you make a choice to buy

northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg is in mclean. what are the big take-aways from today? jeff: well, jonathan, this jury selection process is taking quite some time. we expected a jury to be seated by yesterday. jury selection still going on now. no opening statements today. a lot of the deliberate process is due to the fact that the defense is going with the unusual strategy. this is the strategy arguing that andrew smull when the crime occurred suffered from involuntary intoxication. what they are saying is that smull suffered spinal cord injury in 2012. 2014 he was so intoxicated on he was so intoxicated on ten medications he didn't understand what he was doing. he did not understand the consequences of his action or the difference between right and wrong. so talking to potential jurors the defense is trying to find out any potential jurors who would accept this explanation as plausible. you can imagine that is not an easy sell. now this defense strategy is not exactly arguing that he is not guilty by reason of insanity but it's not terribly far off. the difference in t
