i'd like to call up first jeff hadachi from the public defenders. then i'd like to call up sandy fewer from the san francisco byrd of education. she's the president. ~ board of education. shoe the president. [speaker not understood]. >> thank you very much, supervisors. the police commission ordinance was passed, they didn't have a provision for both the public defender and the district attorney to provide input. and i have submitted a letter on behalf of commissioner angela chan who i'm here to support in her reappointment. the question, i believe, is whether or not [speaker not understood] her record, she has earned a reappointment to the police commission. i believe she has. while i have great respect for victor hwang who i count among my friends, i believe that we need to reward individuals who are as hard working, as conscientious, and a personable a angela chan has been. you know, you spend a lot of time on these appointments and i'm sure you've read about people who don't show up to meetings, people who are not doing what they promised to do.

with that, i want to ask the public defender of san francisco, jeff hadachi, who has been working on this issue with us. i don't know if jeff is here. i don't see jeff. if he can say just a brief few words before we go on to public comment. mr. hadachi. >> thank you. good morning, supervisors. i'm here to express my support for expanding legal services for landlord tenant representation. although i'm a public defender, my efforts of focusing representation of residents accused of a crime, i've seen a great need for legal services in other areas, specifically housing rights, child custody, and family law. san francisco, as you know, is experiencing a grave housing crisis. as a result, thousands of people are being evicted. according to the budget analyst report, there were 3,362 evictions last year in san francisco. the budget analyst has pointed out that it larch the actual number of evictionses are much greater because not ali vixes are ~ reported. most of the people are without any legal assistance through this eviction process. of the eviction that were actually fought, approximate

also thank jeff hadachi, our public defender, sheriff mirkarimi, dean [speaker not understood] from usf and many others that have testified. i think the legal service organizationses and the community-based counseling organizations ~ really identify the critical need and the budget analyst report that supervisor campos called for is going to be really valuable as we evaluate the different budget item that will come forward. and i wanted to thank jennie friedenbach and the coalition for keeping san franciscans housed, san francisco funding proposal, which we'll look at carefully. i did want to say i think the eviction antimapping project has done a good job identifying the 12 cereal evicters, the dirty dozen, how unfair the playing field is against tenants as they go up against well feuded landlord attorneys ~ like the so-called [speaker not understood] and that we try to identify the critical lack of fairness that exists for many tenants that are trying to seek basic, basic help. i think the request from the eviction defense collaborative and others and the community-based organizations
