joining us is jeff horowitz, the ap reporter who broke the story earlier today.i appreciate your time today. i know it's been a big day explaining this work to everybody. thanks for being with us tonight. >> thanks for having me. >> i know you don't want to talk about your sources or your reporting process too much, but what can you explain to us about how this came about, about how you knew to look, for example, for this company that manafort operated, how you figured out that he might have this kind of a relationship. >> so i have some very talented colleagues who are working in moscow, kiev, cypress, all over the place on this stuff. but without getting into sort of the details of reporting and some of the sourcing is confidential, what i can say is that we obtained from a number of different places memos that manafort wrote to oleg deripaska, who is a russian oligarch very close to putin. for a number of years back is sort of one of putin's top business lieutenants, top allies in the business community. and in these memos, which were sort of associated with t

jeff horowitz is life with us, the reporter that worked on it. this is allegations that paul manafort that worked for russian interests but said he did not, right? >> that's true. paul manafort, trump's campaign chairman for five months, including the republican convention has said his work in eastern europe was to helping a ukrainian party. the documents and the sources that we have been in touch with and reviewed in terms of the documents demonstrate that man ford was in fact working throughout a number of years, starting in 2004 and continuing to 2009, he was working on behalf of men close to vladimir putin and traveled with him on trips. >> the white house has tried desperately to distance itself from paul manafort. they said he worked for a limited time and a limited capacity, which i think by any observation is vastly understating his role. in the convention, he went reporter to reporter and was introduced as the chairman hoff the campaign. it's not as he was one of the hanger ons. >> this is probably true. i don't think that sean spicer wi

i'm joined by jeff horowitz of the "associated press." thank you for joining us.l us about this connection between this guynd what's his name a trump? and putin? put them all three together. these three characters. >> sure. so let's start with oleg deripaska and putin. oleg deripaska is a magnate who survived bloody and contentious wars, lots of fighting, literal fighting in russia to dominate that industry. known to the u.s. government in terms of past diptlomat iic cab, close to putin, travels with him. that's oleg deripaska and putin. in terms of deripaska and m manafort, manafort was hired by deripaska, to represent his interests both inside -- both in a number of former soviet block countries and also to sort of promote chose interests in washington as well. that's coming dreirectly from a contract and memoranda connected to the contract. very explicit. the goal is to help the putin government and help oleg deripaska's interests. separating those things out in russia is hard to do. >> paul manafort said it did not involve representing russia's political inter

joining us now is one of the reporters who broke this story, jeff horowitz of the associated press.the time period we are talking about and what exactly it was that manafort did. >> sure. so starting in sort of around 2004 to 2005 paul manafort did work in europe and our key player found he is subsidizing a lot of work in including ukraine was pasca who is a billionaire known to be sort of among putin's closest allies in the russian business world. >> so this was a proposal, jeff. did manafort ever carry out any of the work? >> so most certainly he was helping dareposka i guess with promoting independence of montenegro. since then and also he was doing work in ukraine that was very definitely pitched as pro-russian. there was, however, a much larger and grander plan to undercut future. refgs like the one that overthrew a russia friendly government in ukraine. a plan to do that that we are not sure whether or not it was fully realized but what we know is paul manafort was offering his services and claiming his ability to pull strings in moscow and in the west and was doing his very b
