and msnbc contributor and political analyst jeff johnson.e are a lot of things going on, but one thing people are talking about is the treatment of president obama. people are saying that no president has ever been called stupid, been called an idiot more, been disrespected in the news more, been disrespected by his colleagues more. some people say this is what you get when you sign up to be president. what do you all say? >> i say i think it's ridiculous. i say despite the fact bush got beat up in the press and the media, one, we've never had a president that's had this kind of news cycle. but two, if you want to be honest, the racial undertones that exist in the comments can't be denied. and so that's the piece that's different than anything else we've seen. >> what about those times, george bush looking like a monkey? all the comedians. you all had this h. some george bush being stupid jokes. >> we will, he was stupid. but nobody ever equates white people to being monkeys. that's not a negative stereotype that we say hey, white people are

joining me now is jeff johnson, a contributor to msnbc and maria teresa kumar, executive director of c contributor. jeff, do you think the obama record of success is getting lost out there? >> i think that it is -- it has gotten lost from the standpoint the campaign, the administration and the democratic party, for that matter, has not done a good job of talking about it. at the end of the day the republicans have controlled the conversation. they've controlled what the issues are. but i don't -- i really want to see the administration and really the campaign talk about the auto industry, the bills that got passed from '08 to '10. talk about the fact that people are now able with pre-existing condition to be able to get health insurance. talk about young people that are able to get pell grants and go to school. these are all wins that the obama administration made happen. i just don't hear them shouting it from the rooftops so those independent voters have something else to make a decision based upon. >> aside from being one of the more known commentators in the country. i know you to

jeff johnson, and david and ana. this morning, doubling down. >> i plan to continue on and make sure we have a real alternative to someone who stands behind lies and defends them. we have a candidate who is not willing to stand up and tell the truth when it comes to some things that his campaign is saying. that to me leads to real serious questions to whether that man can be trusted to tell the truth on a variety of other things. >> gingrich has tried this strategy before, and he's a chameleon, but it really lan stuck. can rick santorum stick this on at the last minute? >> i think he's probably got more chance than gingrich's, because gingrich's own ads have not exactly been truthful as romney has been saying, but santorum is finally coming to the attack ad. he's been on a positive campaign, but this -- it's difficult to say if he can make headwind where gingrich has failed. >> is this a last hail mary? >> i'm not sure of that as more of a strategic option. i agree, i think that gingrich is too much of a polarizing f

i'm joined by jeff johnson, richard wolffe is an msnbc political analyst and contributor from washingtond.c. richard, i want to start with you. your reaction to hearing that speech. do you think a lot of people are going to have whiplash after seeing that? >> he said despite the differences, the gap between them on the issues, he still thought he was the best person. there's a mirror image for huntsman, which is he wrote about what a great leader president obama was when working for him and now, according to the speech he just gave, he thinks president obama is engaged in class warfare and has somehow weakened america around the world and before just not so long ago, he thought mitt romney was a disaster and couldn't be elected and now, he's the greatest person ever. there is whiplash twice over with huntsman. he's general speech. the general tenor of it, the words, very patriotic, very nicely delivered. if only he could have executed even his announcement speech in that way, he might have been in a better position, but the whip hash effect is real and it's about his service for presiden

let me bring in jeff johnson. there's something very nice about seeing the first family there and they're going to do some work at that school. at that service project in the d.c. area, but how important do you think it is for him to sort of set that example, to make those comments? >> it's huge because for a long time, mlk day was really just a day off. >> which is what a lot of holidays work into, right? >> and there were ceremonies and celebrations and there was a lot of music and dancing and speeches, but i think this push for service really speaks to the legacy of who he was. if he wanted a holiday for himself, which i doubt. but if he did, he would want us to do the work he did. >> and the president mentioned the controversy over the memorial there. and the quote is going to be changed. the one that is etched in stone right now reads i was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness and the reason people didn't like that is because the full quote says if you want to say that i was a drum major, say tha
