jeff mason covers the white house for reuters and he joins me now. jeff, i'm going to get to some questions. just a moment. but can you comment on what we were just discussing. is there discussion or reason for bringing in this new general, dan kane now to be the chairman of the joint chiefs? because by dan's description, dan deluce, of course, the reporter of whom i'm speaking, he doesn't seem like an obvious choice to take this position. >> i mean, i would defer to dan in terms of the military sort of background, which. was which was really good context. the political background is i've seen that the incoming if he's confirmed, chair of the joint chiefs of staff has has worn a maga. hat before and appears to be supportive of trump. so that must have been or very well may have been, shall we say, a key ingredient in in how the president made that decision. and i don't mean just wearing a hat, but the point is that he, the president trump, is someone who prizes loyalty above all things. and in the we've seen in his first month in office and the second

and our colleague jeff mason, our friend from reuters, was asking those questions.look, this has been something that the president has been eager to sort of watch from afar. i think benefiting from the headlines of government is being trimmed back, but also keeping a bit of a distance in case there are any issues here. but it was extraordinary to see them standing so close for so long. and, caitlin, i was thinking back to the eve of the inauguration, when you and i were at a rally at the capital one arena not far from here. we saw elon musk come on stage talking for just a couple of minutes. three weeks later, he has actually the work to show for what he's been doing, and it was extraordinary to see him going on and seeing the president allow it, and in fact, wanted them to do it. i'm told the white house also is interested in shining a light on what elon musk has been doing, but also pushing back a bit in a public relations effort. a campaign effort, if you will, to sort of respond to some of these legal criticisms of what is going on throughout the government. but

with the help of our leadoff panel this evening, jeff mason has worked a very, very long day, and he'swith us tonight. white house correspondent for reuters, leanne caldwell, chief washington correspondent for puck news, and dave weigel, political reporter for semafor. all right, jeff, you were at the oval office with elon musk and president trump today. what was your main takeaway? >> well, first of all, it was just interesting to watch president trump allow somebody else to sit or to stand in this case and take questions from the press. and it certainly underscored how much leeway the president has given to musk, how much he trusts him and how much they are both on the same page with regard to this effort that musk is leading, which he says is the goal of which is to get rid of government waste and to reduce spending. so just the dynamics of that were quite interesting. and also the fact that mr. musk said that he believed his effort was transparent. i asked him, you know, i said your critics and your detractors say that you're leading a essentially a hostile takeover of government.

jasmine, right from notice, jeff mason from reuters and the wall street journal's olivia beavers. good morning to you all. good morning. so this is all a busy last night about how this all came out. there's been obviously criticism and some support across the political aisle. we're going to break that all down. but what about where this goes from here. you know trump they said in that white house statement that they could escalate, that they could retaliate if canada or mexico or china respond in kind. mexico says it will retaliate. china says it's going to take it to the wto. the world trade organization. canada said 25% tariffs on billions of dollars, tens of billions of dollars of u.s. goods. jeff, what do you expect? where does this go? how does this end? because the white house is saying we've got to curb illegal migration, stop the flow of fentanyl, but didn't really specify anything other than that in order to prevent this trade war from escalating. >> yeah. >> and i think trade war is the right word. >> or the right phrase. i mean, it's full on. and the white house didn't
