our own jeff paul has all the details. sa's police chief is angry. he's now pledging an independent investigation using outside agencies saying he wants to restore the public's trust. now, this is video from the first arrest that brought the situation to light. robert johnson, who was unarmed, was punched over and over again during a domestic disturbance call on may 23rd. an arrest report reveals one of the officers claimed johnson refused to sit down and was showing body language like he wanted to fight. johnson's attorney says the actions were unjustified. after reviewing, mesa pd has placed five officers from that incident on leave and two more officers from an unrelated arrest the week before. >> let me be crystal clear, i'm angry and i'm deeply disappointed by what i saw in those videos. it's unacceptable, and it needs to stop immediately. >> reporter: that second incident happened on may 17th and involved a 15-year-old boy who was ultimately charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. the c

jeff paul joins us with the latest. ff. >> the lava slowed down a little bit, but the lava's reach is still growing and in just a 24 hour period, ten additional homes were destroyed and authorities warn that number might only rise. as you take a look at the aerials, you can see the lava burning through this rural and residential neighborhood. fountains at one of the lava fissures is shooting lava up to 120 feet in the air. and emergency officials say it's only a quarter after mile from covering a major intersection where two highways meet. with that happens, it would isolate neighborhoods and anybody wanting to get out. they've issued a mandatory evacuation order. >> if there's an incident where we have through search and rescue and it's too hazardous or foyer rescues or any respondents to go if there. we're not going to require them to go in there. >> and the action at kilauea there is summit deflation. the state is working to create an additional escape route for others who might be stranded. they're chipping away at o

the latest right now from jeff paul. what are you hearing, jeff?> this is something that we were sort of expecting. emergency responders told us don't be surprised if this number of houses destroyed jumps. it hard to tell really what's going on back there. the lava covers this area. we're learning at least hundreds were destroyed overnight and one of those homes belonging to hawaii county's mayor. the unfortunate thing is, most of the people we're hearing in the area were already evacuated. we haven't heard of any injuries or deaths yet regarding this eruption. this gives you an idea of how much coverage this volcano is spreading out to. 7.7 square miles, this is on top of things happening at the summit of the volcano. we had another earthquake this morning, 5.7 seems like the activity is continuing on. the lava is the main thing. it's not stopping. it might slow. the fountains might not reach as high as they were. it's spreading into the ocean right now. >> neil: this does not seem to be beyond real estate destruction, homes destroyed certainly. n

we begin with jeff paul live in los angeles where a rally wrapped up about an hour ago. ood like when the rally was in process? >> well, arthel, the group out here seemed very passionate, frustrated and angry about what's happening at the southern border. we saw a lot of folks carrying signs, chanting along with other members of the crowd out here. a lot of different age groups, young and old. and many families out here in particular hoping that their voices would be heard. now, at its peak, organizers estimate more than 55,000 folks were in attendance. they were gathered here to protest a zero-tolerance policy that has separated more than 2,000 immigrant kids from their parents. there was also a lot of looking ahead to november. several politicians took to the stage where they pushed the crowd to cause change, using their ballot in the up coming midterm election. l.a. mayor garcetti says the treatment of immigrants is an issue that's personal to him. >> my grand father came over the border as an immigrant in the arms of his mother. can you imagine if she had had her chil

jeff paul is live from one of the so-called tender age facilities in tornillo, texas. jeff?well, we are one of the tent cities far away from the tender age facilities but i know we have crews over there. we have seen protesters, demonstrators and people showing up here in tornillo to see what is going on. we are hearing ten mayors from some of the biggest areas like los angeles and miami who will be here tomorrow because they are concerned about what is going onioned the road over here. that is where the tents have been set up by the government to house the younger kids who have been detained. you can see these are provided by the government. no media has been allowed to take pictures or even go inside. this is separate from what is happening in mcallen where some of the younger kids are being housed. we are learning the government has set up at least three tender age shelters in south texas for toddlers. a fourth center could open up in houston but the mayor there says he doesn't want the shelter saying it would be enabling inhumane proc tis. >> this issue is different. thi

jeff paul came out of one of the facilities just a second ago-with immigrant children are being held.s live in tornillo, texas. jeff, what did you see? >> dana, we've been out here the last week or so. we wanted to go into the tent facility to see what is going on. so far we haven't had access. today was the first chance that we got to go inside this facility to see what life is like. the kids in there ages 12-17, mostly boys, my first impression is very orderly. almost military-like. the kids -- i'm not saying military in terms of somebody being ordereded to do things. very structured. one of the other points, this is an emergency nonpermanent shelter put in place according to the organizers here and the people that set this up because of this zero tolerance policy. they had to make room for the kids. they have get three meals a day. ten bunk beds. 20 kids per tent. the other thing i noticed, we weren't allowed to talk to the kids but makes you realize they're kids in they're. drawings pinned to the wall. books in their beds. so -- they like to play soccer, a lot of kids playing socc

jeff paul is live in los angeles with the details. jeff. >> reporter: julie, the sheriff's department and the mayor of kansas city spoke earlier today saying both deputies died doing what they believed in and will not be forgotten. they are trying to figure out how the inmate managed to break free and grabbed a gun. this all happened yesterday while the sheriff's deputies were transferring the inmate back to jail. some how the deputies were overcome by the inmate and they believe the inmate possibly grabbed one of the deputy's guns and started firing. the sheriff's department says to the best of its knowledge, the shooting happened in a secure gated area and that suspect was handcuffed. >> from what i observed and what i believe the investigation will show is they followed proper procedure. we always evaluate procedures but we did confirm that they did follow proper procedure. >> reporter: both deputies were transported to a nearby hospital but their injuries were two severe. rohrer was on the force for seven years, king served for 13

jeff paul is live in texas. you are on the ground there what's the situation like from your eyes?, dana, we are less than a mile from the u.s.-mexico border here in tornillo. behind us if you can see off in the distance beyond those fences sort of a white structure, those are the tents that the government has put up to house. so teenaged boys that have been moved here from the more permanent structures. they are trying to make room for the younger kids at the permanent facilities. who are right now being separated from their parents. now, a little while ago, 30 miles northwest from where we are in el paso, demonstrators gathered to protest that zero tolerance policy. folks lined the streets for several blocks as they marched to nearby detention centers. some chanted free our children now. others carried signs with messages reading, quote: humanity doesn't require a green card. >> we are here today to let the children know that they are not alone. we are here with them and we will continue to fight until the children are free. >> now, people who advocate for this zero tolerance pol

jeff paul is in hawaii. jeff, what's become so much more concerning in the last 24 hours?lava flows have slowed down, but the volcano's reach continues to expand. in fact these streams of lava are getting closer to homes and on the verge of covering up the very few escape routes that remain. in about a period of a day, ten more homes were destroyed bringing the number of houses levelled to at least 87. emergency responders say lava is only about 175 yards away from covering a major intersection, where two highways meet. if that were to happen, it would isolate entire neighborhoods trapping anyone who would need to get out. as a result, a mandatory evacuation order has been put in place, and what that means is those folks who don't belong inside could face arrests or fines. as for the people who live inside, the county says they are not going to kick people out or force them out of their houses, but they are not going to put any of their first responders lives at risk if they decide to stay. eric? eric: jeff, meanwhile, you know, the island is no stranger to volcanic activi
