jedediah: jeff paul joins us live from el paso. jeff? starting to see a lot more police activity, more troopers showing up on scene going in-n-out of the walmart, where this shooting happened and a big part of the reason why if you take a look behind me that this is still an active crime scene in a very big crime scene at that. officers and other investigators were in that walmart parking lot and throughout the facility, having to log and carefully go overall the evidence from this shooting that has left 20 people dead and dozens of others injured. now we know the first shots were fired off shortly after 10:30 a.m. local time, and this was a packed store, some estimates saying about 3,000 people were inside, taking advantage of the tax-free weekend and for back-to-school shopping. witnesses say the suspect, who we are not naming, or showing his face, basically shot anything that was moving trying to kill as many people as possible. police responded within minutes and managed to take down the suspected shooter a 21-year-old white man from

jeff paul is reporting live from el paso. jeff? >> yeah, rick. we knew on the day of the shooting the suspected shooter got out of his honda civic and gave him self up to a motorcycle officer that was nearby on the scene what is new to see in writing, that according to his affidavit, he admitted to the shooting but he said that he was in fact targeting mexicans. that would go in line with the idea that the authorities are considering filing federal hate crimes charges in addition to the capital murder charges and that the alleged shooter faces. we're learning more about the phone call that the suspected shooter's mother made to the allen police department in late june, weeks before this mass shooting. we're told the suspect's shooter's mother made this call. it wasn't to 911 or to call for service. it was more of a call to the main line to get some information. she didn't leave her name and her son's name. the way that we're able to confirm that this call happened is by going through manually and looking at the security camera footage and listeni
