jeff paul has the story. >> reporter: thousands of firefighters in australia are getting some help from mother nature on tuesday. cooler weather and isolated rain showers helping crews shore up their containment line's. hundreds of fires still burning in new south wales. fires have killed more than two dozen people and burned through an area more than twice the size of maryland. the bushfires have also done some major damage to the country's wildlife killing millions of animals including koalas and kangaroos. >> there was a spark and fire and i didn't think there would be an you live. >> now we are getting a better sense of the financial cost from the fires. >> reporter: insurance officials say losses have more than doubled in the past two days to nearly half $1 billion. there are expecting that number to keep going up as they assess the losses to businesses and their employees. >> there are people who may not have lost their homes but they don't have a place to turn up for work today. they are not sure how they will get their next paycheck. the cost of this is unprecedented. >> reporte
