our national security correspondent jeff pegues has more on on the suspect. >> reporter: law enforcement sources say the gunman o par mateen called 911 during the mass shooting. in the call to a dispatcher he stated his name and pledged his allegiance to isis. while he was not under investigation at the time, officials say mateen had been on law enforcement's radar at least twice in recent years. mateen was a u.s. citizen born in new york to afghan parents. he was living in fort piecer, florida, and has been married. in 2012 mateen attended the handle which is an annual pril grammage to mecca in saudi arabia. a year later in 2013 the 29 year old turned up on the fbi's radar for the first time. coworkers said he had made inflammatory remarks about terrorist ties. the fbi's rod hopper is leading the investigation. >> the fbi thoroughly investigated the matter including interviews of witnesses, physical surveillance and records checks. ultimately we were unable to ver fie the substance of his comments and investigation was closed. >> reporter: in 2014 he came to the fbi's attention again, t

jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. >>> we're learning more about some of the orlando victims. hena daniels is here in new york with their stories. >> reporter: good morning. more than 300 patrons packed the pulse nightclub early sunday morning, there to have a good time. dozenses ending up as victims in a massacre. 34-year-old edward sotomayor, known as a caring and energetic man, worked for a company that held gay cruises. 23-year-old stanley almadovar was a tech investor relations. juan guerrero, 22, worked as a telemarketer and had just started college. luis villema, also 22 years old, worked at run is versal studios and was known for his warm demeanor. kimberly morris, 37, moved to orlando a few months ago and had just taken a job as a bouncer at pulse. during the attack, nina justice got a text from her son, eddie. >> he texted me at 2:06 and said, mommy i love you. in the club there's shooting, that was at 2:06. trapped in the bathroom downtown. please call police. i'm going to die. call them mama now. i'm telling -- i'm in the bathroom. he's coming. i'm going to die. >>

homeland security correspondent jeff pegues has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: gun store owner robert abbele says in the weeks before the orlando shooting, omar mateen tried to buy body armor at his gun shop. mateen was told the store didn't sell body armor. >> at this time, he pulled away, and got on to his cell phone. when he was on his cell phone, he had a conversation in a foreign language. that was more concerning. then he came back, and he was requesting ammo. >> reporter: abbele says his employees were so concerned, they called the f.b.i. authorities say the gun store was not able to provide them with a name. on the night of the shooting, an official familiar with the timeline tells cbs news that mateen was active on social media before and during the ag the shooting, mateen posted on facebook, alliance to isis leader abu bakr al baghdadi. then, after the shooting began, mateen paused and sources say he searched for "pulse orlando" and "shooting" perhaps to see if the massacre upon of was trending online. he also made calls to 911 and a television station on ongoin

jeff pegues is covering this trial in baltimore. >> reporter: prosecutors say officer ceasar goodson, the police van's driver, intentionally took pretty gray on a 45-minute rough ride to jail. deputy states attorney michael scatzow blamed goodson for not ensuring the 25-year-old was wearing a seat belt. our justice correspondent jeff pegues has the details. >> i love you people. i love las vegas. >> reporter: investigators say the attempt occurred last saturday as the candidate was holding this rally in las vegas at the treasure island casino. a federal law enforcement official tells cbs news that this man, michael steven sandford, was taken into custody after attempting to grab an officer's gun. according to court document, sandford, who is a british citizen, got up from his seat and attempted to take an officer's weapon by grabbing the hollister and handle with both hands. sandford admitted to trying to shoot and kill trump, acknowledging that he would likely only be able to fire one to two rounds before he himself would be killed by police. sandford has been in the u.s. for the last year and a half. last thursday investigators say he drove from southern california to las vegas. on june 17th, he went to battlefield vegas gun range where authorities say he fired 20 rounds from a nine millimeter glock pistol. investigators say he had been planning the assassi

our homeland security correspondent jeff pegues has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: moments before the attack, the killer left this chilling message on facebook: it was the precursor for what was to come inside the pulse nightclub. investigators are trying to determine who else may have been involved in the planning of the massacre. the killer's wife is becoming a primary focus. law enforcement sources say there is surveillance video of noor salmon. ing ammunition with her husband. they also say she drove with him when he cased the nightclub. she has told agents she tried tow talk her husband out of committing an attack. if she had prior knowledge, she could face charges. in 1995, mark fortier admitted he knew of plans for the bombing in oklahoma city. after cooperating, he served 10.5 years in prison. f.b.i.'s ron hopper is leading the orlando investigation. >> we are continuing to do interviews to see if there is anybody that was associated. whether that means they were involved in the planning our execution of this act, they will be brought to justice. >> reporter: author

our homeland security correspondent jeff pegues talking to his sources all day long. s joining us now. jeff, what do you know? >> scott, we are learning a lot more about the 911 call mentioned. the one that omar mateen made during that mass shooting. it was the one where he pledged allegiance to isis. according to a u.s. intelligence source, the call came from a bathroom at the night club. and at some point 911 had to actually call him back. we don't know why. whether the call was dropped. 911 dispatchers actually called him back. at that point we're told he made this pledge to isis. and also made a reference to the boston brothers and the boston bombing. so that, scott, is some of the new information we just learned. >> jeff, we understand that mateen had been contacted by the fbi more than once, what do you know about that? >> there were at least two d contacts. in 2013 and 2014. in 2013. there were statements he made to co-workers according to law enforcement sources that stated some sort of connection to the tsaranev brothers that carried out the boston bombing. in
