jeff pierce watched hundreds of students in san francisco pick out backpacks to kick off the new year it was a carnival- like atmosphere where back-to- school children get to pick out their choice of a new backpack to start the year. >> i like hello kitty. >> it allows the kids to come in and own it. they get to walk up and down and choose what they like. and that school is important. >> they've been giving us backpacks filled school supplies. >> they'll be redty and prepared for school. >> it makes them more confident to go back to school. >> if you don't have a backpack, you can't get all the stuff that you really need for your education. >> the families that came to the event were introduced to dozens of community services to prepare them for the school year. >> some healthy granola made healthy, vitamin c. this is about promoting health. this is about bringing our community together. >> reporter: the school of nursing at the university of san francisco provided a physical exam to those attending. >> what we're trying to do is also address their health needs and do some prevention

this weekend, after a water main broke, kron 4's jeff pierce looked into how they are dealing with it. >> vallejo drinking water was still flowing down this railroad right of way saturday afternoon after a 20" main broke on friday. that main was a primary source of water for the city. >> over 30,000 people are affected at this time. upwards of close to half the city. >> reporter: city officials admit that the emergency operations center to determine the extent of the water shortage and its consequences. >> i know that water pressure is down significantly for a number of people. i do not know if there's anybody without water. >> reporter: carla nickerson and her mother ruth who live near the break would like the city to know they are without water. >> well, we can't flush toilets. we can't wash dishes. we can't do anything without water. it's, um, you can't wash our face or take showers right now. so it's not good. >> reporter: the vallejo fire department has called for backup should they have to respond to a fire. >> we really don't have enough water to fight fires ordeal with anythin
