jeff ranieri. what do you think people should be on the lookout for as the storm moves north? is it winds, is it rains, is it flooding or all three? a trifecta? >> it is all three, but it depends where you are. if you're in new england, massachusetts, connecticut or interior sections of new york, it is all about the rain. no doubt about that. but for new jersey and long island, we're talking about the wind and the storm surge. if you decided to stay along the coastline it's been reported four to six feet of storm surge. and as we get into the high tide coming at about 8:00 for most of long island and new jersey that's when things could definitely get a little bit worse. but we do have a little bit of some good news at least on the storm front. when you look at it from a meteorological perspective, you can see on the bottom edge, there's not much in the way of cloud top development. we look for the brighter colors, you can see at the top of the storm to show us where thunderstorm development may be.

let's go to jeff ranieri. he joins me live with the path and the potential impact of irene. a good morning to you, jeff. >> good morning, alex. this storm system is strong by all accounts even though it went from a category two to a category one storm. still make it strong by many standards. also hurricane force winds extending out about 09 miles from the center of the storm. let's get a close up look on my satellite. around the center of the storm there's a little burtt there in terms to have cloud tops. we could be seeing a little bit of strengthening. we have to wait for the 8:00 a.m. update for word on that. look at this storm winding up. it's piling anywhere from three to six inches a i krogsz north carolina for the inland areas right into virginia. that is our other big concern inland flooding. woef a tornado watch box as this storm system is producing some rotation. as we siem in you looking at the very ragged center of the storm. the eye wall has it starts to move in near morehead beach. right near atlantic beach as well. they're getting the worst of it at this point

our own jeff ranieri is going to be in new york city tomorrow morning covering the storm. new york, potentially one of the harder-hit areas as this moves there u. for us it's quiet. high pressure across the desert southwest. yet another weak system moving through washington. keeping things cooler than average the last couple days. we're going to warm up. tonight quiet, a little fog. possibly drizzle right along the coast and crossing the golden gate bridge. overnight low of 60 in gillroy. tomorrow i think it's going to be as warm, maybe a couple degrees warmer than what you saw today. 86 san jose. so a couple degrees warmer for you. 83 palo alto. this is why we live here. beautiful. 70 in san francisco. still a little fog through the midday. 82 kentfield. 87 in napa. here's the forecast for the north bay. much the same. touch warmer than what we saw today. the heat continues into tomorrow and wemonday. i think that marine layer is going to rebuild. going to cool back down, not too far down. it's not on thehe graphic but worth mentioning, i think the labor day weekend will

he's covering for jeff ranieri, who is covering that storm on the east coast. rob, tell us is the trajectory for eye remember still on course? >> still holding its path but the information we received at > the top of the hour has just a little bit of good news in terms of the wind speeds. still at least officially a category 2 hurricane, moving northeast at 11 miles per hour. but the trend overnight into tomorrow showing signs of just some subtle weakening. irene as it hits north carolina there, state a category 1 hurricane, but watch the icon as it crosses over long island, switching over to tropical storm strength. so perhaps not quite as strong, the wind speeds we were thinking about 24 hours ago. but rainfall totals could get close to 15 inches of rain. so flooding and coastal damage a real concern through the weekend. we'll have a continued look at irene. >> you would think that everyone is trying to get out of hurricane irene's way, but planes heading east are still going. cheryl hurd is live where those last nights are about to leave. the scramble is now

. >>> let's turn our attention to meteorologist rob mayeda in the studio because jeff ranieri is in new york tracking irene. we expect the hurricane to go to a category 1. what kind of impact will that still have on snork>>the biggest impact in terms of winds will be felt first at landfall, probably 12 hours away from hitting the outer banks of north carolina. we can see the eye wall with hurricane. that's where the hurricane-force winds are just offshore, approaching the coastline. maybe a category 1 toward long island and new york come saturday. you see winds sustained at 100 miles per hour. for now, temporarily talkinga a category 2 hurricane. a large storm, tropical storm-force winds almost extending out 300 to 4 hundred miles outward from the center. hurricane-force winds about 80 miles from the center. the storm will cross over land into north carolina. that is where we'll see those winds of 100 miles per hour. notice the path tracking right up along parallel to the eastern seaboard, east of philadelphia, new york city heading on into sunday. and that's when it's going to transiti
