i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. we're tracking heavy rainfall to the south.e radar is putting this into santa cruz, possibly after 1:00 in the morning, producing one inch of rainfall. we'll have details on the time coming up. >>> workers are clearing a notable piece of land in san francisco to make way for a major housing, shopping and office complex. but the land they're clearing has radiation. >> tonight, we're learning that the dirt from that hunter's point, the former naval landfill is being trucked to the bay area. vicky nguyen has the inside story. >> we're talking about parcel sea at hunter's point. it's been under a massive cleanup for chemicals and radiation contamination to make way for a neighborhood to house 25,000 people by 2017. but corners they stay are being cut and health and safety are at risk. trucks full of dirt have begun moving tons of soil. the navy said any contaminated dirt has been cleaned for radioactive material. the workers say they're worried that recent shipments have been sent out without proper testing. >> they would go dig it

jeff ranieri has the results of today's sierra snow pack survey. what does it mean. >> we are going to see some improvement but not as great as we would like. we're not seeing anything in terms of heavy activity. we're in a bit of a brake and the next system is sitting off the coastline. the last system gave the snow pack a little bit of a boost, but don't let your guard down as that situation still remains very critical. the department of walter resources reported the snow pack near he way 50 today. they measured it being just 24% of average for this time of the year. at a couple days ago it was at 22% of normal. it normally provides a third of california's water supply, but not this year. >> it means that things are still in quite bad shape, and there's, i'm sure there's going to be, as we move through the rest of the season, we'll see a lot more efforts at conserving what water we do have. >> so obviously a lot more snow is needed. you can see some of the snow totals at the ski resorts. kirkwood at 15. we likely could have another foot of snow a

terry mcsweeney is looking at snow pack and chris sanchez is measuring numbers but we begin with jeff ranieri. such a discrepancy, a 19-inch difference across parts of the bay area. >> you can see where some of the heaviest rain ranged. a lot of green correlating with one to two inches but a wide-spread zone until the orange and red between four to over 12 inches of rainfall. two of the hardest hit cities would be santa rosa, also back towards napa where the totals did surpass eight inches. let's get a look specifically here. most certainly the highest at 21 inches, napa 12 inches but isolated higher amounts that did come in and you head to the south bay, and that's where this rain shadow set up. what happens is you get moisture from the pacific with this strong west to east flow. higher elevations squeeze out the moisture, so you're up four to 500 feet and five inches of rainfall and head down to lower elevations. stole the rain inson san jose and had just over one inch. so being up higher in elevation with this storm definitely proved to be much more beneficial. over two months rain here in

we begin with chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. jeff, what are we in for tomorrow and the weekend? >> heavy rainfall coming our way. that next storm system lining up on the satellite loop. what i want to take you to next is not something we show you often. you see this area of yellow? that is some intense moisture coming from hawaii, subtropical moisture. once we get a small piece of this, it's going to amplify our storm systems by this weekend and boost our rainfall totals. so let's take you to the future cast. tomorrow morning, getting up, 6:00 a.m., we'll have cloud cover and areas of drizzle. we won't start to see areas of rainfall begin to measure up until we head into early friday amp, beginning in the north bay and then again transitioning off to the south. this will be the beginning of a lot of wet weather through sunday at the upcoming weekend. we'll have the timing coming up. when all is said and done, by sunday, this will likely be some of the wettest weather we have seen since december of 2012. we'll have details on some major snow later on. >>> rain today means water t

chief meteorologist jeff ranieri joins us now. jeff, it has been a dry january. >> it is coming into play, with the last day of january in the books. all of 2013, the driest calendar year ever on calendar, breaking 50 to 1000-year-old records. january goes down as the driest ever in san francisco. for san francisco, just 0.06 of an inch of rainfall. let's take a look at the hardest hit location. that has been san jose since july 1 for the very important water here, 1.68 inch of rainfall. in the past, we've had 24-hour rainfall better than that. 99% of the bay area now in extreme drought, and there is a small zone that is in the worst category, which is exceptional. that includes south gilroy, watsonville and fresno. it has never been declared before in the history of the drought monitor in california. we should say the drought monitor started in 2000. with that staid, extremely bone dry conditions here. the other thing we like to look at is the snow pack, right now just 18% normal. so even with two feet of snow this past week, that

jeff ranieri is looking at rainfall totals, but first we want to begin with rob mayeda. >> finally the rain has arrived in the south bay. it took about 36 hours for it to drop out of the north bay. the santa cruz mountains picking up about another inch of rain. you can see the rain still stretching into the north bay. and it's a the north bay counties tonight that will still see the flash flood watch in effect through about 9:00. that means localized flooding is still possible. which is precisely what we saw out in mill valley. and monty, we had some damage to storefronts in mill valley today. >> reporter: that's right. we're outside of a bar called the 2 a.m. club. this bar along with a taco shop, both flooded. they've put out some sandbags here in case the water starts to rise in the next few hours. now employees spent the day mopping up and disinfecting. the flooding was most severe at the back of the bar where the bathroom drains were taking on water. the flooding was even worse at joe's taco shop where he had about a foot of standing water in his office earlier today. he says a st

meteorologist jeff ranieri. how are we looking as we head into tomorrow morning? >> that storm system has started to push off towards the east. we're not done with the heavier pockets just yet. in the south bay, we've had heavy rainfall, about 1 inch per hour. a lot of this is pushing towards mt. diablo and towards mt. hamilton. a decent clip across here, lasting about the next 35 minutes. it's been raining hard here across almedos. a lot of these pockets of rainfall are beginning to fizzle out. one area i'm concerned about is this strong area of thunderstorm activity heading right towards martinez, producing rainfall rates of 0.8 of an inch per hour. not only the rain, but also the wind has been coming in. 2 to 3 inches with the first storm here in the santa cruz mountains. san jose, for the first time likely in a year, now seeing rainfall totals in a 24-hour period near one inch. it's been that long since we have seen that much rainfall here across parts of the bay area. that wind has been going top wind gusts at 66 miles per hour in los gatos. we're joined now

chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is adding up how much snow has fallen but we start with terry mcsweeneyoining us live from donner sum it. . >> you can see how much snow has fallen. they are estimating 5 feet here. below 6500 feet there is little snow. skiers are not complaining. the folks at the state water resources department are. at boreal mountain, night skiers race along on five feet of new snow. >> i haven't been up here for the last month or so. so fresh snow always good. i want to get some nice cavs in there. >> reporter: boreal marketing director matt peterson is more excited. >> it was steep and deep. people were out here hooting and hollering all weekend. it was dumping snow. >> reporter: this was the scene at the snow pack measurement at the end of january. despite the new snow in the highest elevations, state water officials do not think it will have much impact on the drought. >> we can look outside and see it snowing or raining and say it is great news. and it is good news but it's not enough good news to make us stop before conservative with our use of water. >> reporter

our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is tracking how much rain we need but let's begin with marianne favro where the dry weather is creating a new health concern. >> reporter: those concerns are about west nile virus and the air we breath. mosquitos can carry deadly diseases and the female mosquito needs water to breath. you would think because of the drought we would see less breeding because of fewer water sources. some mosquitos only need a capsule of water to breathe. this tiny mosquito can carry a deadly disease, west nile virus and while a female needs water to lay about 100 eggs at a time, the drought is anything but a duh durant. >> we're not going to be out of the west nile virus woods, so to speak. the virus is here, it's established. last year was the third worst season since the virus got here in 2004. >> reporter: in fact, things could get worse. experts say because there are fewer watering holes, more birds and mosquitos are coming together at the same spot making it easy for the inspects to bite the birds. the drought is also impacting our air quality. just look at thi

. >> we bring in jeff ranieri who continues our coverage of the drought and the situation bleak but i know you have weather changes. >> yes. we're going to see an extreme shift in the coming days. we want to set up how dry it is. since july 1, 2.67 inch of rain. that is it. that now puts us at a 7.62 inch deficit across san jose. the drought has improved slightly up in parts of the north bay with that last round of heavy rain from february 6 through the ninth where we did pick up 8 to 14 inches. some of the worst of the drought in the extreme south bay, that's where we are now at the worst category of drought exceptional in gilroy, extending down to watsonville and also salinas. coming up in the forecast we're going to talk more about the next system that's moving in. it's going to line up offshore by tuesday evening, then move in by wednesday. we'll let you know how much rainfall we could get coming up. >> thanks, jeff. new details on the eighth homicide this year in san jose. police now say a deadly shooting may have duly been a case of self defense. this happened last night mere mo

chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is track thing next store. >> it is absolutely dry, but just out here offshore, we are looking at two different storm systems that will continue the possibility of rain over the next six days. going to tap into some southerly moisture and at this point, it looks like around wednesday night and thursday, the first wave of wet weather will arrive. then a second, stronger storm system this weekend. what you should know is forecast models continue to disagree with the track and intensity by this weekend, so we'll fine tune that and have more coming up in the full forecast. if you're traveling anywhere, even on a hopper flight in california, watch out for delays tomorrow morning. st. louis, chicago and new york city will be the cold spots with snow and temperatures in the single digits. >> thank you, jeff. >>> getting credit, but did they do the work? a cpr instructor is in hot water for a scheme involving emergency responders. the instructor is accused of celling online cpr recertifications. rural metro made the discovery after reviewing internal records. t

. >>> thousands came to -- let's turn things over to jeff ranieri. we're talking about clear and sunny today but it's going to change. >> yes. any kind of soot or anything in the atmosphere will get washed out as we're tracking rain. some of the warmest temperatures today, record setting heat. palo alto 75, dublin 74, san ramon at 73. we do have extreme changes on the weather maps this week. right now, yes, it is sunny, it is clear. offshore, two different storms will be impacting us. the first round arrives wednesday night, also into thursday. moderate to heavy rain, gusty winds, possibly isolated power outages. then we'll see a second round of rain coming as we head throughout friday. this winter there is uncertainty with the storm track. that will vary the rainfall. at this point looks like some of the heaviest at the coastal mountains. it could take a southern track getting some of the rain to the south. nonetheless much-needed rain on the way for the santa cruz mountains. of course we can certain lir use it. you can see in san jose we're now mor

. >> let's turn things over to chief meteorologist jeff ranieri who continues our drought coverage. the recent wet weather helped a little bit, but, really, we need so much more. >> certainly do. take a look at san jose rainfall average, just a little bit of a drop in the bucket here for february. we only picked up 98/100 of an inch. we still have about another good month here of potential storms to see our totals boosted. now we did have some slight drought improvement mainly in the north bay. that's where we had 8 to 14 inches of rain from february 6 to the 9th. went from the extreme level down to the severe category, so, again, slight improvement there, but do remember in the extreme south bay, south gilroy, you're in the worst category of drought right now at exceptional level. coming up we'll have details on an incoming storm system next week that could drop quite a bit rainfall and lines up tuesday night. details on that in about ten minutes. >> thank you. >>> now to a followup and more trouble for san francisco general hospital. police say a patient attacked a 93-year-old wom

. >>> good evening, i'm jeff ranieri, tracking dense fog for tomorrow morning and the possibility for rainfall. when it moves in and when it moves out in a few minutes. >>> happening now, eastbound 580 still partially blocked. chp officer hurt in a three-car crash there this afternoon. everyone, though, is expected to be okay. this is what handed, the officer was standing in front of two disabled cars in the center divide on 580 when a third car, the driver rear-ended them. officials say all lanes should be reopened by 7:00 tonight. >>> just into the newsroom, san jose is about to become a lighter brighter at night. the city counsel approved several initiatives today designed to save san jose money and energy. one of the big changes is the instillation of more led street lights. the mayor's office says san jose's yellow or amber lights were installed in the 1970s to save energy and prevent light pollution. the new leds or a brighter white light but don't cause much light pollution. they use 60% less energy. chevron is in charge of inchm t inchmentiinchmen implementing it. >>> one fall

nbc bay area's chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri, tracking the storm. wither back to win thor. >> finally, after not having too much winter here the past month or so live radar right now does show those dry conditions, but it's going to be all about this strong southerly push of moisture out in the passivic. that's what's going to be responsible for amping up two particular storm systems as we head throughout the next six days. in fact, rain chances over each and every day in that next six days. so let's go ahead and get you to the latest on these storm systems. some of the data right now showing us the best possibility of some rain moving in wednesday night, also into thursday. by this weekend, a second and stronger storm is likely, but what you do want to know, like every other storm in the past this year, there is high model disagreement, every forecast model is showing a different scenario at this point, but just do know we have a chance of rainfall over the next six days for the entire bay area. we will fine tune the details on this coming up. one

. >>> let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri with our forecast. >> our storm this morningas now moved to the south but all eyes are pointed to this stronger storm out in the pacific. once that gets here, we are expecting some heavier rounds of rain. more on the timing of that coming up in about 45 seconds. we'll take you outside right now. although the storm is gone from this morning, we eastern not done yet. we have widespread cloud cover, drizzle and mist so thick across the east bay, you can't even make out the bay bridge at this point. light winds at 5 miles per hour. we'll go ahead and take you into our microclimate forecast. i want to get you into the storm system we're tracking. it continues to develop out here in the pacific. it's all about that subtropical moisture moving in from the south that's what is going to amp up this storm system as we head throughout saturday and also sunday for the potential of some flooding rains to come our way. so take you to the timing on this. this is really unbelievable. we probably haven't seen wet weather like we're going to see

but we get with jeff ranieri. >> the front that brought us flooding issues has now moved on.ainfall totals impressive. mill valley at 1.21. now that 1.03 in san jose. we tallied up the numbers. it hasn't been that wet in a 24 hour period since december 23. with another storm system to hit us we will have flooding concerns up there. the highest in the north bay, marin, napa and sonoma counties. but the flood risk will remain elevated for the east bay and also the south bay. we're joined by rob mayeda. and you're along the guadalupe river where things got

terry mcsweeney is looking at snow pack and chris sanchez is measuring numbers but we begin with jeff ranieri. such a discrepancy, a 19-inch difference across parts of the bay area. >> you can see where some of the heaviest rain ranged. a lot of green correlating with one to two inches but a wide-spread zone until the orange and red between four to over 12 inches of rainfall. two of the hardest hit cities would be santa rosa, also back towards napa where the totals did surpass eight inches. let's get a look specifically here. most certainly the highest at 21 inches, napa 12 inches but isolated higher amounts that did come in and you head to the south bay, and that's where this rain shadow set up. what happens is you get moisture
